Columbia City Council Meeting Agenda, June 4, 2007

Regular June Meeting will consider approval three zoning items. City growth continues with first readings for two annexations on South KY 55, second reading and vote on Bank District, North 55. Zone change for 502 Rice Drive expected to be approved. 2007-08 Budget will get first reading. Nothing in published agenda on progress on Green Hills annexation and Parrott Avenue Annexations, but this could come in Mayor announcements

Wisdom: A marking place on the way to Glasgow



2007-06-03 - Metcalfe County, KY - Photo from the Lavonne Anderson collection.
This grand old store building still stands though the general store is long since closed. The general store at Wisdom was always a marking place on the road to Glasgow when KY 80 was the main route from Columbia, when most Adair Countians passed this when on trips to buy goldfish at Newberry's 10 Cent Store, visit the Howard Clinic or get their tonsils removed at TJ Samson Hospital, or dine at the Dutch MIll Restaurant in Glasgow. The structure was immortalized in at least one of Fred and Richard Young's Kentucky Headhunters videos. The store building is still in the Young family, now owned by James Howard Young, whose residence can be seen in the left hand side of the photo. The business, at the time of this photograph, ca 1900, was owned by James Howard Young's father and mother, Oren and Effie Shirley Young. The building fronts on the south side of KY 80, with Cave Ridge, Edmonton, Gascon, Gradyville and Columbia to the left; Lecta, Glasgow, Hays, Smith's Grove, Bristow, and Bowling Green to the right, and straight ahead, on the side of the store, the road to Randolph, and Goodluck or with a right in Randolph, Summer Shade.

Horse Cave Theatre featured in Kentucky Living Magazine

Dear Friends,

Kentucky Living, the publication of state electrical co-ops, gives alot of print and online exposure to Horse Cave in its June issue.

My choir director realized I would want to see it and broughtthe magazine by tonight.

Adair County Fiscal Court Agenda June 5, 2007 monthly meeting

Agenda Adair County Fiscal Court Meeting
Tuesday, June 5, 2007, 7:00pm CT, Adair County Annex Basement
Thirty-two items will be on the Tuesday, June 5, 2007, Adair County Fiscal Court, including a report from the Adair County Emergency Management Director and the appointment of a County Treasurer.

The regular monthly meeting of Adair Fiscal Court is the second Tuesday, which falls on June 12, 2007, but that day conflicts with out-of-town meetings.

The Columbia-Adair Co Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank all of the people that made the 2007 WHAS Crusade for Children possible. We arrived on Saturday night to present our money, and it was aired on WBKO-13 and WHAS-11, at the same time.

There was a large crowd of around 75-100 people including students and faculty from the Adair Co. School System. The fire department would like to thank everyone for the donations. Here are the totals from Adair County:

Jonathan Moore reports in from Los Angeles, CA

Jonathan Moore, the son of Nelson and Joanna Moore, writes about the new HBO show for which he has been a writer, about his new teaching job, about plans for a documentary on Lottie Moon and the comedy screenplay he's writing, and about an lasting encounter with a young lady he met in LA who has ties to a community just 30 miles from Columbia, a community "so small you never heard of it," she said.

To Family, Friends, & Folks back home in Kentucky:

Just a quick note to say greetings from Los Angeles.

I'm still in LA and have been here for ten years now. I just completed a six-month job in the writing department for a new show on HBO entitled "John From Cincinnati." It debuts this month, I believe. I was hired by David Milch, the producer, who also wrote and produced "Deadwood."

I'm currently finishing up my first comedy screenplay and hoping to make it into a low-budget feature one of these days. And at least part of the story takes place in Kentucky.

So many people are noticing the dry weather we're having. David Herbst, who is now the head country agent for a vast area in Western Kentucky (which officially starts when you turn the corner in downtown Edmonton to head toward Glasgow), said that corn is way up in the Kentucky's cornbelt around Christian County, but it is not getting any rain, and is already twisty.

That's a bad sign.Many people, younger than Grover Gilpin, Lyle Smith, Sam Pelly, Joe Russell Barbee and me are saying this is the driest they have every seen it here.

But it ain't so.

Remembering Bob Allender: A moving eulogy from a daughter

Allender, given at his funeral at the Columbia United Methodist Church yesterday, June 2, 2007. She has graciously allowed us to do so here. I can think of no better reading this Sunday. - ED

During Dad's last few days, he talked more than he had in the past eight months. We all tried to talk about things he might remember, although there were only a few he commented on, there was one that he had the most to say.

It was when I mentioned his mom and dad; he said, "It's been a long time ago."

When we mentioned Mom, he always smiled and looked around, and the library always got a smile also.

I have seen Robert Brock, Artistic Director of Kentucky Repertory Theatre at Horse Cave, present The Revelation of John as a one person performance piece several times. I had that pleasure twice at the theatre and three other times in church sanctuaries (two of those churches were congregations I served as pastor). I hope to see Robert present The Gospel of Mark later this year at KY Rep.
