ACHS golfers tournament June 9 at Pinewood

The Adair County High School boys' and girls' golf teams will be holding their third annual 4 person blind draw golf scramble on June 9, 2007, at Pinewood Country Club.

Registration begins at 10:30am and closes at 11:45am CT.

Entry fee is $30 per person. Feel free to call ahead, if you want, and enter early. The Pro Shop is (270) 384-3613.

  • 1st Place is $450.00 cash, 2nd place is $325.00 cash, and 3rd place is $225.00 cash

  • 1st Hole in One on Hole #8 wins a vehicle sponsored by Don Franklin Ford

ACHS juniors participate in third annual Safety Zone

Had it been a real emergency, you would have been instructed

This Friday, May 11, Adair County High School juniors participated in the third annual Safety Zone. Anytime we want to achieve something on a large scale for our students, we can always count on our community to be part of it, and this was no exception. We had a full day of safe driving and other safety activities. With help from so many experienced and qualified community people who share our concern about our young drivers, makes this an event to remember.

Chart with LCADD unemployment in extended story
Unemployment in April 2007, at 6.0%, in Adair County was down from the previous month (6.4%), but was still higher than a year ago when it was 5.7%.

Adair County's unemployment was higher than the statewide average jobless rate of 5.1%, and almost two percentage points above the national average of 4.3%.

Pottery Workshops at Giles House June 23, 2007

The Giles Society will sponsor a pottery workshop on Saturday, June 23, 2007, for young people ages 7 to 12 at The Giles House on Spout Springs Road in Knifley, KY.

The instructors for the workshop are Jeff Scott and Donnie Perry, widely acclaimed# potters. They will instruct the students in the making of little pots that are designed from some aspect of nature that surrounds the Giles House.

Sue Stivers receives UK Centennial Laureate Award

It is but yet another acknowledgement of her contribution to her profession and the Adair County community.

Book Review: Hideaways and Fatal Falls: The Piper on the Mountain

I have long been fond of the Brother Cadfael series of mysteries by Ellis Peters, pseudonym for Edith Pargeter. Both in book form and as a British television series shown on public television, they continue to intrigue me. Every now and again for an evening's pleasure I reread one of these stories set in the twelfth century.

The twenty-one Cadfael mysteries are set in Pargeter's native Shropshire along the English/Welsh border. If you are not familiar with this cloistered herbalist and his colleagues at Shrewsbury Abbey, then a treat awaits.
