Feedback: Picture almost haunting in its own way

To the editor, ColumbiaMagazine.com:
Thank you for the memorial picture sure brings back memories and I want to thank your magazine for recognizing those soldiers. Vietnam was not a popluar war and a lot of those soldiers came home to some ugly statements and life changing disabilities and some did not come home at all. I appreciate anyone serving in our military yesterday or today. That picture was almost haunting in its own way.

Memorial Day Weekend: Remembering the sacrifice in Vietnam

THE INFANTRYMAN IN VIETNAM
Photos accompany this article
To the editor, ColumbiaMagazine.com

Mr Murley's nice photo made me wonder what the memories and impressions of the public were of Vietnam.

I'm sure many have little or noidea of what that country was like in the late 60's.

The two which accompany this note show another side of that conflict. One shows a couple of GI's on patrol in scrub brush country somewhere northwest of Saigon in early 1967, the temperature would have been very close 100 degrees.

The second photo is of an unamed Adair Countian, a GI on a day patrol in a Rubber Plantation, inthe Loc Ninh area, which is probably around 75 miles North of Saigon and very close to Cambodia. When you view the picture, notice the red clay dirt on his pants. He probably had worn these pants for at least two weeks, as jungle fatigues were very seldom washed. You just wore them until they wore out.

I hope we can all remember to say a prayer of thanks for those which gave their all, in all our wars and also for our troopsin the middle east at this time.

Proud To Have Served

2007 Crusade for Children: Important day in final week

Photos accompany this article

By Donald Hare

Today is a big day in the 2007 Adair County Crusade for Children fund drive. Churches are taking up offerings, roadblocks are set up on the Square, and this afternoon Tv cameramen will be at Adair County High School for the turn-in and tallying next Sunday at Adair County High School. The schedule for the final week is as follows:
  • Church take up offerings: Sunday, May 27, 2007, from 8:00am until 12noon, CT, when churches all over Adair County are being asked to remember the Crusade for Children. There will also be roadblocks on the Columbia Square, and firemen will be at the Columbia-Adair County Fire Station on Merchant Street to take donations.
  • Roadblocks: Friday, June 1, 2007 and Saturday, June 2, 2007. You can also donate at the Columbia-Adair County Fire Station on Merchant Street
  • Tv Broadcast June 2, 2007, when Tv cameras will be at Adair County High School for to televise the turn-ins from Columbia-Adair County, Knifley, and Breeding Fire Departments.
The last event is always a dramatic one, as names or businesses and individual donors are read. Each year the fire departments in Adair County work to raise money for the Crusade for Children.

This is a great charity. All the money donated in Adair County returns to Adair County in the form of grants. Dollar for dollar. Among the items purchased from proceeds are a handicap accessible bus, computers, and school supplies. The committee for the Columbia-Adair County Fire Department Crusade for Children is headed by Brandon Lewis, Chairman, and Dennis Loy and Joshua Brockman Co-Chairman.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh: When life gives you a lemon, appreciate it

ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor. This timeless column appeared in the August 7, 2005 edition of the Munfordville, KY Hart County News-Herald and is reprinted with permission.

By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh
SO, WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU A LEMON,
USE IT TO APPRECIATE THE MARVELS OF CREATION
I have friends who tell that they have gained all sorts of insights into the wonders of God's creation through their travels. Some have told me that they came to a fresh realization of the vast intricacy of nature by visiting the Grand Canyon, the Canadian Rockies, Oregon's Crater Lake or the Hawaiian volcanoes.

Others have told me that they have never experienced the power and beauty of changing seasons like they do when they see Callaway Gardens at the peak of the azaleas or Great Smoky Mountains in the fall. (I chuckle when I think that people believe they must travel hundreds of miles to see spring or fall color.

Tom Chaney: Of writers and their books. Gospel of Judas

Book review: The Gospel of Judas. Viking Press, 2007

By Tom Chaney

The discovery of the Gospel of Judas had been rumored for a decade before the archaeological find was made public by the National Geographic Society in 2006.

Evidently the text is a Coptic translation from the original second-century Greek. Following the discovery near Al Minya in Middle Egypt in the early 1970's, the Gospel of Judas traveled from pillar to post ending up, somewhat damaged, in the hands of philologian Rodolphe Kasser and other scholars who restored the text.
