Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Lessons from those Burma Shave signs ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh WISDOM FROM THE ROADSIDE This essay first printed in The Hart County News-Herald, January 8, 2006 Back in the late 1980s Robert Fulghum became a celebrity with the publication of All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. That book was a collection of essays about wisdom found in everyday places. I remember liking that book a lot, and the idea of finding great truths in common circumstances has always appealed to me. A recent article about the anniversary of the publication of Fulghums book reminded me of another source of wisdom. Tom Chaney: May 20, 2007. Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln Of Writers and Their Books: Book Review, Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. by Doris Kearns Goodman. (Simon and Schuster, 2005). By Tom Chaney "An honest politician is . . . . . . one who, when he is bought, stays bought." Thus spoke Simon Cameron, powerful political boss of Pennsylvania, on the run-up to the Republican convention in 1860. Historian Doris Kearns Goodman attributes this remark to Cameron in her intriguing book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln (Simon and Schuster, 2005). Cameron was shrewd -- as were the other political handlers who managed the rise of four popular candidates in 1859 and 1860. William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edwin M. Stanton, and Edward Bates -- each was sure he had a lock on the Republican nomination on the eve of the Civil War.
