Does anybody remember Smith Motor Co., Cane Valley, KY?

Does anybody remember Smith Motor Co., Cane Valley, KY, a dealership owned by the brother of Everett Smith, who was a well known barber in Columbia right up to through the 1950s, as I recall.

Sam McCaffree, Topeka, KS, remembers that it operated in the 1920's, as he recalls. Mr. McCaffree left Columbia, KY, in 1933, and settled in Topeka, where he found the Columbian Bank & Trust Company, now a large, privately owned, independent bank.

He recalls that the dealership first sold Star cars and later Durants. He remembers that a cousin of ours, the late Clark Smith, owned a Star vehicle.

If anyone has any memories or memorabilia of the Cane Valley dealership, we'd like to hear about it. - Ed Waggener

Tom Chaney, April 18, 2007: Pope Joan

Of writers and their books. Below the horizon of the past, a book review of The Legend of Pope Joan by Peter Stanford

By Tom Chaney

Peter Stanford, vacationing in Rome, borrowed a friend's apartment facing a small square near the church of Saint Clement. He became intrigued by a shrine about the size of a guard booth across the way. With a faded fresco of a Madonna and child, this edicola had the air of an unkempt country cemetery "once loved and tended but today forgotten by all but a handful of devoted souls."

A search of available guide books revealed but one reference to the place. "The whole house [was] pulled down by order of Pius IV in 1550.... The fact remains that for centuries the Romans told the story of how an Englishwoman called Joan succeeded in being elected as Pope John VIII."

Culture and Enlightenment: Country Gentlemen at WKU

Invitation submitted by Tom Waggener

Sunday, April 22, 2007 - 2:00am CT-Country Gentlemen at WKU
Pioneer Cabin Concert Series. Country Gentlemen here Sunday, April 22, 2007, at 2:00pm.

July 4 will mark the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Country Gentlemen, a group known for "the sound that changed the color of bluegrass".

The Country Gentlemen were so innovative that, nearly 50 years ago, a reviewer said of them, Well, theyre good, but theyre not bluegrass - a judgment barely credible now. A major element in the revolutionary sound of the Classic Gents was Eddie Adcocks distinctive banjo style.

Letter: Lane marking especially dangerous on overpass

To the Editor:

I agree strongly with Ed.

Many others have also commented to me about how dangerous the new intersection is, especially in the dark.

The lane marking was never completed and it is especially dangerous on the parkway overpass in the dark because there is a "left over" white line or two in the wrong place.

It is also very easy to miss the KY-80 turn from either direction on KY-61.

Thanks for speaking up, Breanna.

s/Doug McCammish

Feedback: More dangers around new intersection

Writer adds long gaps in yellow lanes, the "wierdest place"

To the editor

Thanks to Breanna Bolin for initiating this topic. I agree that this area is dangerous, especially for drivers unfamiliar with the road.

Drivers have to guess where they are supposed to be, except for the solid yellow line, and it is not continuous, with long gaps where there are no lines to show traffic lanes.

The wierdest place is when you are driving south on 61 and want to turn onto the eastbound parkway ramp. The lines are completely out of place there. The yellow line is over next to the barrels, which we have had to dodge on the highways recently after high winds.

If the blacktopping is complete (it doesn't appear to be), it's past time for the road to be marked correctly.

Does anyone know why it is taking so long? And we do need lighting. It is VERY dark in this area.

Marsha Walker

It's time to rally around our Students for CATS Testing!

With same parental and community support as we've shown for athletics and academics team, Adair County students can be No. 1 when it comes to CATS tests

March saw tremendous parental and community support for the athletes in the Adair County school system as our teams competed at the district, regional, and state level in basketball. When the boys' team represented Adair County in the big show at Rupp Arena, the entire community got behind the team, attending the games, displaying signs, organizing parades, and cheering the team on to victory.

The academic teams at Adair County Middle School and Adair County High School also represented Adair County very well in state competition in March, bringing more accolades to the county by capturing team and individual trophies.

Feedback: Complaints on lines, lighting, at new interchange

To the editor:

I'm really glad the Columbia Bypass is finally coming. However, I notice when I drive to Sparksville to see family that the lines and lighting around the new exits are very poorly done.

You can barely tell where you're suppose to be going at night.

Is there any plan to redo the markings and maybe put some lights up? I would just think we could do better than what's currently there. Have there been any complaints about it?

Breanna Bolin

Luckey tells Greensburg Rotary LWC clearly stronger, better

LWC President compares school today with status eight years ago, when he last address Green County civic club

By Duane Bonifer, Director of Public Affairs, LWC

It's been almost eight years since Lindsey Wilson College President William T. Luckey Jr. last spoke to the Greensburg Rotary Club.

Since then, the college's enrollment has swelled by almost 500 students to its current level of 1,800; the campus' physical size has expanded by more than 30 acres, thanks to the acquisition of 20 pieces of property adjacent to the campus and a gift of 20 acres of property on the Louie B. Nunn Parkway; and several significant buildings have been added, including an addition to the library and student union building, a campus ministry center, a new four-story residence hall and a 42,000-square-foot science center that Luckey said is "the best science facility among Kentucky's private colleges and universities."
