Glasgow, Cave City sophomores to head LWC student government

Friday the 13th was a lucky day for two Lindsey Wilson College students as they were unanimously elected president and vice president of the college's student body for the 2007-08 school year.

William Andrew Sadler III was elected president and Jeremiah Burd was elected vice president of the Lindsey Wilson Student Government Association. The two were introduced at the college's annual spring formal, held in Biggers Sports Center.

Lunsford asks state to dream big, aim high, at CU/KHIPP Forum

Candidate backs Heartland Parkway; promises no new taxes

Campbellsville University hosted her third in a series of gubernatorial candidate forums with Democratic candidate for governor Bruce Lunsford speaking about his "Blueprint for Change" for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Lunsford's "Blueprint" provides a plan for implementing universal health care for all Kentuckians, improving education and creating high-paying Kentucky jobs.

Jane Gentry Vance induction as Poet Laureate is April 24, 2007

The Kentucky Arts Council will celebrate Kentucky Writers Day, highlighted by an induction ceremony for Jane Gentry Vance as the 23rd Kentucky Poet Laureate for 2007 and 2008.

This years Kentucky Writers Day and Poet Laureate Induction Ceremony will be at 10:00amET/9:00amCT, Tuesday, April 24, at the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort.

The new Kentucky Poet Laureate is well known in Adair County arts circles and through family connections here.

Carlos Russell Ballou, 80, World War II veteran

Mr. Ballou was a member of a prominent, respected Adair County family. He was a farmer, a member of the Columbia First Church of the Nazarene, and had served in World War II
Carlos Russell Ballou, 80, a resident of Summit Manor Nursing Home Columbia, Ky. passed away Saturday, April 14, 2007, at 12:30am CT at the nursing home.

The funeral service will be Monday, April 16, 2007 at 1:00pm CT, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY, with Rev. Scott Ezell the officiating clergy.

Adair County unemployment high, at 7.3%, for February 2007

Still, county is third best among Lake Cumberland counties; but vector not good. Story includes ColumbiaMagazine.com table of Lake Cumberland Area Development District counties

Adair County's employment picture in February 2007 went counter to the improving trend in 76 of of Kentucky's 120 Counties, and was one of 40 counties in which unemployment rose. Six counties remained the same, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training in the Education Cabinet and 74 counties improved.

In February, 642 of Adair County's 8,770 civilian labor force were unemployed, for 7.3% out-of-work. Statewide, the figure was high, at 6.6%. Against national figures, Adair County fared even worse, with almost one and one-half the U.S. rate of 4.9%.

Even so, Adair County, at No. 3, ranked near the top in the 10-county Lake Cumberland Region. Only neighboring Taylor and Green Counties had a better figures for February 2007.

Relay for Life Benefit Show at the Dream Depot tonight

There will be a benefit performance tonight for the Relay for Life at the Dream Depot tonight, Saturday, April 14, 2007, at 7:00pm. "Singing for a Cure" will be Andy Mann, Greg Blair, Levi Scott, and Craig Dean. All proceeds will go to the 2007 Adair County Relay for Life.

KSP cruiser collides with man on horseback; horse euthanized

Trooper, rider treated, released at WRH; rider charged, jailed; accident under investigation
Trooper James Richard was traveling west on KY 206, five miles east of Columbia, KY, when he struck Jonathan Bryant, who was on a horse in the westbound lane. The location of the collision was a rural, unlighted highway. The incident occurred Friday night, April 13, 2007, during a moderate rainstorm.

The horse was critically injured and had to be euthanized at the scene. The State Police Cruiser received severe damage. Trooper Richard and Mr. Bryant were both treated for minor injuries and released from Westlake Regional Hospital in Columbia. Mr. Bryant was charged with DUI non-motorized vehicle and was lodges in the Adair County Regional Jail.

The collision is under investigation by Sgt. Rob Winsett and Accident Reconstructionist Toby Young of Kentucky State Police Post 15, Columbia, KY.

Fletcher orders $25 million for Cumberland River Counties

Governor takes action after his requests to Legislature failed to get results he wanted; nearby Russell, Cumberland, Clinton, Monroe, Pulaski, and Wayne will benefit directly

FRANKFORT, KY - Governor Ernie Fletcher today signed an executive order establishing a funding framework to address immediate public safety concerns and other harmful effects caused by the lowering of Lake Cumberland and safety concerns with Wolf Creek Dam.

The United States Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) has described the dam as "one of the highest risk dams in the Corps' inventory." In January 2007, the Corps decided to lower Lake Cumberland to 680 feet above sea level to make structural repairs to Wolf Creek Dam.

There will be a benefit performance tonight for the Relay for Life at the Dream Depot tonight, Saturday, April 14, 2007, at 7:00pm. "Singing for a Cure" will be Andy Mann, Greg Blair, Levi Scott, and Craig Dean. All proceeds will go to the 2007 Adair County Relay for Life.

Churches present "Captivate 2007" at FairgroundsHigher Praise Church, Russell Springs, and Praise Assembly of God, Columbia, KY are teaming up together to host an outreach ministry to the community on Saturday, April 14, 2007. The event, "Captivate 2007," will be held from 10am - 1pm CT at the Adair County Fairgrounds, Columbia, KY. Activities will include: Inflatable games for the kids plus free cotton candy and snow cones, free clothing, as well as free plate lunches. The Kentucky Blood Mobile will be there for those wishing to donate blood. Free blood pressure screening and body-fat analysis will be performed. For single mothers and senior citizens, free oil changes will be performed, with a certified mechanic on-site. For this service, you must call for an appointment at (270) 866-8811, ext. 11. Talent show, cookout, auction at Trinity UMC Trinity U.M Church will have a talent show, cookout, and cake auction this Saturday night April 14, 2007, at 5:30pm CT, at the Family Life Center.
