Tom Chaney: 8 April 2007: The Price of Murder

Of Writers and their Books. Review: The Price of Murder by Bruce Alexander

By Tom Chaney

Time is against the avid reader. About the time one gets to know a writer and has a yen to read another of his books, the author is inconsiderate enough to die. Over the last ten years that has happened to several of my favorites.

Expert on American Chestnut at Salato, Wednesday, April 11, 2007

With largest in Southeast U.S., most productive American chestnut tree in U.S., Adair County has a special interest in the species

The American chestnut tree once dominated the forests of Kentucky and the Eastern United States. Capable of growing more than 100 feet tall, this "Redwood of the East" served as a valuable source of food for our native wildlife. However, a deadly disease imported into our country a century ago all but eliminated this giant.

Cumberland Pkwy Stories: Just an ordinary day for a toll collector

By Geniece Leftwich Marcum
Story from April issue of Senior Quest magazine, Edmonton, KY

Marchs issue of Senior Quest carried an article on the robbery of the Edmonton Toll Gate once located on Cumberland Parkway. The story of course, brought to mind other incidents which took place there, involving collectors and a few close encounters with big trucks.

These true stories are in no way meant as a slap at the trucking profession. Any collector will readily admit that some of the best drivers in the world were regulars on Cumberland Parkway. They were careful, courteous and always mindful of the laws of the road.

Letter: Comment on Mayor letter, population static at 3,800

To the Ed., CM:

I can say without reservation that I am proud of all involved in procuring grants and funds to install sewer lines in Green Hills Subdivision. I am also thankful that we will not have to pay the usual hookup fee.

I am proud that our community is growing, expanding, and becoming a better place to live. I am elated that a combination of rust, decay, and a few wayfaring automobiles have finally removed the 3800 population signs which I drove by for three decades. How we could have gone through three censuses and not have lost or gained one single soul is beyond me. We must hold some kind of record for a static population. I am being quite frank with you, if after the next census our population is 3800, I will consider going street by street and counting everyone myself.
