Deep freeze causes two water main breaks on Tutt Street

2007-02-05 - Tutt & Burkesville Streets, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Ed Waggener.
Columbia Utilities General Manager Jim Williams, and Water and Sewer Superintendent Dana Rogers handled traffic control as utilities workers were in the midst of their second water main break on Tutt Street on Monday, February 5, 2007. Williams blamed the break on the cold weather and the aging cast iron main, installed many decades ago, on Tutt Street. Also in the photo are, from left, Phillip Stotts, Steve Breeding, and Jaremy Austin. The operator is Wally Grant. The crews are replacing the cast iron pipe with PVC, which stands up many times better to conditions in Columbia. The break took its toll on water loss, as the crew tried to minimize water cut-offs. Unfortunately, Doggone Classy, the pet store on the corner, had to be without water during while the remedies were applied, but that was the only location to be without during the operation.

There will be school in Adair County this morning, but busses will operate on a one-hour late schedule.

David Jones, Director of Student Transportation for Adair County Schools, called at 4:51am CT, this morning, Monday, February 5, 2007, with his decision.

Students should remember to dress warmly to guard against the dangerously cold wind chill, and drivers will need to remember to take extra care while the busses are on the roads at a different times today.

Feedback: Why aren't illegal parkers ticketed?

To the editor, CM,

I would also like to add something to my previous statement. My husband brought up a good point. With these people parking in front of the stores in the fire lane and also parking in handicap spots when they do not have a handicap sticker or tag, why is it allowed to continue? Why are they not being ticketed for it? It is illegal, so why is nothing being done about it?
