McGaha, KY: Tommy Jess Dickerson at McGaha Mill, Sulphur Creek

2007-02-04 .
Frank Dickerson writes, "This is a photograph of my father, Thomas Jesse "Tommy Jess" Dickerson, (1896~1965) taken about 1916~1920. The venue is the old water powered grist mill that was built and operated by one of the McGaha families, presumably in the vicinity of the village of McGaha, on Sulphur Creek."

Letter: COF will miss writer of Another Angle

To Ed, CM.

We will miss the good Reverend. He set a high tone to the conversations carried on over the backyard fence of Adair Co. (My favorite way of thinking of CM.)He also added a much needed eloquence to the Fourth Estate and we will be a little less with his absence.

COFFrom high above beautiful downtown Knifley, KY Note: COF wrote this note on learning of that Rev. Rob Stout, writing as Rev. Joey N. Welsh, had issued a farewell to his wonderful "Another Angle, the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor." To see that column, Click Here. Thanks to the COF for the wonderful "backyard fence" analogy for CM.

COMMENTARY: Striking a balance on beautiful wildlife

"I think as man encroaches into areas once woodland, maybe people need to be aware that not all wildlife are warm fuzzy woodland creatures we see in animated movies."

By Cynthia Meyer
Sycamore Springs, near Breeding, KY

A bobcat was legally harvested by a man near here, on his property off Reece-Hurt Rd. just off KY 533 in Metcalfe county late last year.

I did not mention when I submitted the first pictures, because the first reaction most people have when you talk of shooting a bobcat is, "Why did he do that"? and, "They are such beautiful animals."

McGAHA, KY: McGaha Mill on Sulphur Creek

By Frank Dickerson

Adair Countian now in California
I'm sending a photograph of my father, Thomas Jesse "Tommy Jess" Dickerson, (1896~1965) taken about 1916~1920. The venue is the old water powered grist mill that was built and operated by one of the McGaha families, presumably in the vicinity of the village of McGaha, on Sulphur Creek.

My dad was obviously visiting his cousins on that day from Barnett's Creek and we can't guess why he was on horseback in the middle of the mill pond unless he was trying to cool off his mount.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh. February 4, 2007. A farewell

ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor

By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh
E-mail: joey_n_welsh@hotmail.com
SO LONG, FAREWELL, AUF WIEDERSEHEN, GOODBYE
My title comes from a lyric by Oscar Hammerstein, II written for The Sound of Music. That musical came to the screen in another era. I remember getting dressed up to go see it at downtown Louisville's lush and ornate Rialto Theatre, where we were led to our seats by a uniformed usher bearing a flashlight. Many of the longer movies back then typically featured an intermission and tunes from a film's score as things were gearing up to begin again after the break. Shortly before the intermission of The Sound of Music the von Trapp children sang "So Long, Farewell" to a house full of partygoers, a musical number that was a showcase for the child actors. It was a big movie for a big screen; most people who see it first on television these days don't know what they have missed.

McGAHA, KY: Memories of McGaha reunions at Log Church

A proud proclamation: "I was born at McGaha"!

By E. H. Lepiarczyk

The stories and photographs of McGaha are most enjoyable. My grandmother, Effie Burton Grider (1896-1987), was born at McGaha. The farm of her father, Chrisley Burton (1853-1939), is now owned by Jewel F. Bryant Kimbler.

As a young boy, I can remember members of my family going to McGaha family reunions at Pleasant View Baptist Church. My grandmother and many of her generation called it "the Mouth of Butler Church."

My grandmother attended Oak Grove School, Rev. Grimsley's Subscription School, and Grassy Springs School before going to Columbia High School.
