Letter: Problems with parking downtown

There has to be a way for vans for handicapped to park
To the editor, CM
While driving around the square today, I observed a handicapped van trying to unload a wheelchair with a patient in it. There is not enough room in frontof the old building to unload. He had to park in the middle of the no parking space, wheel the patient to the corner of the Square at Jamestown ST, leave her there, then park the van in front of the consignment shoppe. There has got to be a place for a handicapped van. Oh, by the way--she was on her way to the dentist!

Letter: COF goes poetic, gets the last word

To the editor, CM

Much thanks for the invite to leave the aerie. However, the Allens, Douglases, Tuckers, Giles, Greers, Jessies, McLaurens, Roys and Wallaces among us would prefer to stay on our braes, pamper our bairns with bannocks and carouse with our brach's. Even tho' we came to these knobs and ridges for the same reasons as the Huguenots, we prefer not to mingle with those of the Norman persuasion who speak in words we can neither pronounce or understand.

The COF
On a Tor high above beautiful downtown Knifley

COF, this is beautifully spoken, and there's an element of merit in what you write. Yours is the last word, unless you have more to say. -Ed

Zoning ordinance revision hearing is February 8, 2007

Meeting immediately following hearing may see sweeping recommendations approved to be sent to Mayor and City Council for final approval. Link to complete revision at end of this story. Signage, Big-Box retail, sexually oriented businesses, landscaping, and neighborhood commercial among major updates.

By Ed Waggener

The Zoning Ordinance for the City of Columbia is set to get major revisions, if the Planning & Zoning Commission recommends, and the City Council approves, several changes proposed in an updated document prepared by Kriss Lowry & Associates, Inc., of Corinth, KY.

A P&Z hearing will be held at 6:00pm, Thursday, February 8, 2007, immediately before the P&Z Commission reconvenes to finalize the version it will send to the Columbia City Council. A hearing was held on Tuesday of this week, but the Commission did not adopt changes at that time, in order to give themselves, and the public, more time to study the changes.

Feedback: Nouveau Knifley honyock bloviates a bit

Charges CM with Fancy Frenchyism

To the editor, CMI checked on Caldwell, Robinson and Burton Ridge down at the Crossroads and even deep into Tucker Woods. None of us can figure out what nouveau means. Best guess is that it must be some kind of frenchy word that town folk use when they're around the campus folks.COF- high on a ridge above beautiful downtown Knifley

PS - even tho none agreed on the precise meaning of "honyock," we all claimed to know what it meant.
Bloviating back: Of course they understand honyockand wouldn't know nouveau there. Those are German, not French, Districts, with lots those Neats and Niedts. "Nouveau" would be used in Huguenot Adair County. Places like Fairplay, Flatwoods, and Sparksville. Everybody knows that. Time for you to come down from your aerie and smell the coffee in Three & Four. It could learn you something. -ED

Beautiful bobcat killed at edge of town

Fairly large specimen seen; animals now more prevalent in Adair County

To the editor, CM:You might be interested to know that a most beautiful bobcat was run over just at the edge of town Wednesday morning. I found it laying in the middle of North 55 about halfway between the new United Citizen's Bank and the 551 exit ramp.

It was a healthy looking speciman of 25 to 30 pounds and was probably run over between 7:30 and 8:00 A.M. A little unusual to see one out and about in the daylight hours. It maybe was being chased by dogs or something. Then again, maybe a hunting trip that carried him further from home than usual.

Thanks,
Billy Joe Fudge
Thanks for the tip. Sure would like to have seen it. I didn't get to see it. It seems there are plenty of bobcats in the area now. During 2006, 19 were taken in Adair County. Nineteen were killed by hunters. Eight were trapped. Ten were female, nine were male. These figures are from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife. Maybe another reader will spot one in the wild and we can try for a photo of a live one.
