Scenic Adair Co., KY: Stone remnant of Young's Mill Dam

2007-01-19 - Keen-Wilson Road, over Russell Creek - Photo By Ed Waggener.
The stone remnant of the Alvin Young Mill can be seen on the left bank of Russell Creek, in the center of the picture. It the long dark structure below the longest cedar branch.. According to Cosby Cundiff--and nobody can argue with him even though he lives on past Joppa on Cedar Creek--the mill belonged to the late Alvin Young. It was a hydro-electric affair. The current generated at the dam powered the motors which turned the mill grinders. "He'd (Alvin Young would) go down to the mill about a half hour early and start the generator and in a little while it'd build up enough power the mill," Cosby Cundiff said. There doesn't seem to be much else of the mill to be seen, though it used to be a great place for boys to explore as late as ca 1960, maybe later. To get to the mill, take KY 55 to Zion, turn left on Keen-Wilson Road, and at the top of the hill, turn left at the Dykes "air mail" mail box onto Keene-Wilson. The old mill dam is below a steep bluff, about one-half mile from the fording point on Russell Creek. Cosby Cundiff thinks it would a dandy structure to have around today, to solve the energy crisis. Those who know even more about the mill are invited to submit information about it. We'd love to have a photograph of the mill.

Joe D. to annouce plans on race for governor next week

A story updated at 10:36 Friday morning, January 19, 2007, at the CourierJournal.com says that Adair County native Jody Richards will announce next week whether he will be entering the Democratic Primary for the party's gubernatorial nomination.

The story is by Tom Loftus, entitled, "Richards to decide on gov race run next week."

There have been reports that the announcement would come in Bowling Green on Tuesday, January 23, 2006. When Richards announced in 2004, the venue was the Carroll Knicely Center on the campus of Western Kentucky University, but close Richards allies, including the Flowers Bros, PVA Willie M. Feese, JR, Ralph Roy Waggener and other Columbians near to the Speaker say they have not yet been told the time nor the whereabouts of the expected Richards announcement.

Buddy is lost. Sinclairs want him back

A.L. "Peewee" Sinclair's favorite black and white cat, Buddy, has gone missing.

"I think he rode underneath the car when I came to town," he said. "Blueboy was with him," he said, "and he got away. But I caught him." Blueboy is a Russian Blue, a beautiful animal, but one with a mean personality, as many of the breed are wont to have. Buddy, the missing black and white, has a pleasing demeanor.

"It wasn't my fault," Peewee said, "but Barbara doesn't understand." Barbara is Mrs. A.L. Sinclair. "She blames me," he said.

Sinclair thinks the cat may have left the vehicle in the IGA parking lot. The Sinclairs would like Buddy back, if he's found.
