Activity Report, all of 2006 Note: This is 18th new news article posted Thursday, January 4, 2007, in addition to a number of updates in Events, Birthdays, Classsifieds and other off-the-Front Page departments. To read all the stories for Thursday, January 4, 2007, go to "Stories Archive" in the Site Menu Chief Mark D. Harris of the Columbia Police Department (CPD) has issued the activity report for all of the year 2006 and it details a busy year for the men in blue. The report shows that 835 citations were issued during the year, or an average of slightly over 2.28 each day. The CPD also averaged almost 16 calls for assistance each day, with 5,811 total calls in that category, during 2006. The detailed chart if all police activity follows. It also shows the number of motorist assistances given, help with lockouts, escorts (more than one a day), accidents investigated, injury accidents worked, and cases opened. Adair puts $3,498.03 in Salvation Army Red Kettles Local generosity helps region through Adair County Service Unit. Retail and volunteer support are key factors in the success of the 115th Annual Christmas Campaign By Jaime Feese, Secretary, Adair County Unit Columbia and Adair County residents generously contributed $3,498.03 to this year's Red Kettle Christmas Campaign, which will benefit those in need in the community during the Christmas season and year-round. The Army attributed the 115-year-old campaign's ongoing success to the continued support of retailers who invited the Red Kettle bell ringers to their front doors, to volunteers who generously gave their time, and to the overall generosity of the people of Adair County. "This year's Red Kettle results showed the extraordinary compassion of local residents and retailers," Gerald Reliford, local chairperson, said. He added, "We are extremely grateful to all the contributors who opened their hearts to help their neighbors." Traffic stop results in drug arrest A traffic stop inside the city limits on Thursday afternoon, January 4, 2006, resulted in the arrest of an Adair County man on drug charges. Randy Morgan, 32, was charged with possession of marijuana, no insurance and expired tags. Morgan was lodged in the Adair County Jail. 7 fatalities in Post 15 area in Dec. 2006 raises year's toll to 61 Traffic fatalities were 61 for 2006, compared to 54 for 2005 in Post 15's 11 counties. But statewide, fatalities show marked decrease, with 78 fewer lives lost on KY highways There were seven fatalities in December 2006 in the 11-county area served by Kentucky State Police Post 15, Columbia, KY. The area's highway deaths had already matched the 12-month 2005 total of 54 at the end of November.For Kentucky as a whole, 2006 was an improvement. Feedback: On thrill of seeing Bald Eagle in Alaska Columbian Jerry Marshall writes from Ohio I love the wildlife photos you capture. I saw my first, (and only) Bald Eagle when I was in Alaska. It gave me cold chills. What a beautiful bird. I had never seen one in Kentucky. We see a lot of Red Tail Hawks here in Central Ohio. Keep the pictures coming.
