Neatsville: Once bustling town was incorporated for a time German family founded the river town that once rivalled mighty Columbia as Adair County's leading community. The town was a bustling community with stores, a hotel, a doctor or doctors, and was even incorporated for a time. A less-celebrated flood (than Gradyville's 1907 disaster which took lives in addition to property) in the early 1900s destroyed the town, which also had, in its time, various other names. By Susie Grant While working on my husbands family tree I found the following: The town of Neatsville on the Green River in Adair County Kentucky was named after the Neat family. Rudolph Neat Sr.( Neet ) a native of Germany, came to this country as a 20 year old in 1741. He supposedly arrived on the ship "Molly" from Amsterdam. It is suggested that his hometown was Coburg. In 1998 my husband and I visited the town of Coburg, Germany, and indeed the name "NEAT " ( NEET, or even NIED ) is still used by many families in that immediate area. Rudolf Neat moved to Adair CO, KY from Rowan CO, NC Not much is known about him and his descendants, except they moved from Rowan County N.C. to Adair County, Ky. Luminaries are $5 for each name. The 2006 Adair County Relay for Life will culminate Friday and Saturday, June 9 and 10, 2006, with a schedule of events unlike anything in Adair County, as the committee and the teams race to top last year's almost $80,000 total. From the preliminary campsite check-in, Chair Peggy Lawson's closing prayer, there will be 18 hours which bring Adair County together as possibly no other event does. Wherever you are, if you're an Adair Countian, this one is worth a homecoming to Columbia. Out-of-town media, including Tv stations, have been alerted to cover still mysteriously secret 9:00pm guest speaker. Relay officials guardedly will only say,"You won't want to miss this." We believe them, measuring by the quality of other events. The schedule details follow.
