William E. (Bill) Cooley, 73, member Columbia Masonic Lodge 96

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at 1 p.m. at Grissom Funeral Home for William E. (Bill) Cooley, 73, who passed away Sunday morning.

Bill retired after 32 years with the Kentucky Department of Transportation and was a member Columbia Masonic Lodge 96. He attended the Columbia First Church of the Nazarene.

Jeff Giles is now a United States Navy Commander

Columbia's Jeff Giles promoted
to the rank of Commander

LCDR Jeffrey Allen Giles, Columbia, KY, has been promoted to the permanent grade of Commander (0-5) in the United States Naval Reserve.

Commander Giles is now serving with the United States Navy in Iraq. He was one of 31 who were selected, out of 140 who were eligible for the promotion.

The change in rank came through the Secretary of Defense, acting for the President of the United States after approval of the reports of the selection board which recommended the promotion.

Jeff is a graduate of Lindsey Wilson College, BA, and has a Western Kentucky University MBA, and serves the local business community as Chamber of Commerce Board Member. His family attends the Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Giles is a Little League Baseball Coach and continues to follow the news of the Adair County Little League.

Prior to his current tour of duty in the war zone, Commander Giles had served as as a member of the US Naval Reserves attached to the United Nations Peacekeepers in Ethiopia/Eritrea.

Driver injured after losing control of vehicle, hitting culvert

An injury accident occurred at 9:30am, Sunday, May 21, 2006 three miles west of Albany on KY 1590.

Heather Jones, 30, Albany, KY, was treated and released at Clinton County Hospital. A seatbelt was in the use.

I must confess to an addiction from which I have recovered. For years I regularly watched television. In Texas in 1964 fellow graduate students and I gathered at the house of one of our number every afternoon at 4:00 p.m. for a dose of Maverick reruns.

Last week I wrote about some biblical twins as well as about Anthony and Peter Shaffer, the English playwright twins. Anthony died in 2001, but Peter is now celebrating his 80th birthday. In honor of that occasion, a new production of his 1964 play, The Royal Hunt of the Sun, is on stage in London. In a recent interview in the British newspaper, The Guardian, theatre critic Michael Billington recorded some of Shaffer's insights.
