Thanks to many readers, a lot has been discovered about Woody Woodpecker

The information we've gotten on the giant woodpecker:
He's a pileated (careful with that) woodpecker
and we've learned he's tough to photograph

It was great to watch him operate in the tree. When he wasn't perched, peck, peck, pecking on the tree bark itself, he'd fly over and use the grip of his powerful feet on one of the small dogwood tree limbs and swing to capture one of the red berries in his long beak, then swing back and head for another. He reminded me of a trapeze artist. He visited three times and I had the camera close by on the second visit to try and get a photo.

In last weekend's snow, the last of the red berries on that tree were harvested by a swarm of blackbirds. The woodpecker probably won't return but it sure was fun having him visit and being able to share it with readers. Thanks to all of you who responded.
- LINDA WAGGENER
But the woodpecker is back. And, thanks to you, it's identified and much more appreciated than ever.

Cyrus / Maj. Winfrey--Pickin' em up

It will be remembered that Maj. Thomas Clinton "T.C." Winfrey was one of the four gentlemen who made hasty retreat from the Bank of Columbia early in the afternoon of April 29, 1872.

Further research has revealed Major Winfrey had prior experience in showing his heels--but perhaps not so much so as his fellow Union officer, General Hobson.
