Handsome bronze plaque honors 28 Adair County Heroes

2005-11-10 - Bank of Columbia, Public Square, Columbia, Adair CO, KY - Photo Staff. A WORTHY MEMORY for VETERANS DAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2005: This "handsome bronze plaque" was affixed to the front of the Bank of Columbia in November, 1930. It honors 28 Adair County heroes who died in World War I. Though some of the Adair County communities listed below are long forgotten, the names these men should never be. The marker is located to the left of the public entrance to the bank. Here, in alphabetical order, are the names and communities of all the soldiers honored: Carley Ballou, Columbia, Ky. ; Jacob Biggs, Cane Valley, Ky. ; Estill Blair, Garlin, Ky. ; Wilbert Brown, Casey Creek, Ky: Robert Bryant, Columbia, Ky.; Rollin Burbridge, Fairplay, Ky.; Charlie Elbert Hardin, Dunnville, Ky.; Walter E. Humphress, Holmes, Ky.; Clarence T. Jackman, Columbia, Ky.; Virgil Lasley, Columbia, Ky.; John S. McQueary, Columbia, Ky.; William O. ACHS Band heads to Indianapolis to perform in front of thousands

We wish the AAA State Champion Adair County High School Marching Band good luck in the competition at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, and a safe return home on Sunday
"I can't tell you what the outcome will be this evening," Director Tim Allen told his students as they prepared to leave Columbia and head to Indianapolis for competition with 90 of the nation's top bands, "but I do know this -- YOU are one of the best bands in this nation."

Three yellow busses and many support vehicles which would caravan to Indianapolis competed for space. The big semi with the ACHS Band logo on the side was pulled front and center to the Lacy building this morning to load up with all the things performers must have to do their best. Inside the band room Mr. Allen read off their check lists, "are you sure you have your music, instruments, uniforms," the list was almost as long as a pre-flight check list a pilot might use before takeoff. Then he asked if they'd remembered jackets because while it was beautiful this morning, the temperatures in the evening will be cool.
