CYRUS REPORTS: Armistice Day, 1930: In Remembrance of Heroes

Many events are marking the week leading up to Veterans Day, Friday, November 11, 2005. It's a national holiday, and many will use it to 'ponte' or bridge, the extra day into a frivolous 3-day weekend. But a large number of Adair Countians will reverently, and properly, observe the special day. It used to be called "Armistice Day," or, in this area, "Ar-MISS-TISS" day. Cyrus says it properly still is Ar-MISS-TISS day. He's dug us the history of one of the biggest events ever in Columbia, Armistice Day, 1930, when the Bank of Columbia got its "handsome bronze plaque." It's a wonderful research, rife with names of people you know, or have heard wonderful stories about.

May God bless our veterans, and may we never forget them and the sacrifices they made for us.

On a cold November Tuesday in 1930, several hundred Adair Countians assembled on the Public Square of Columbia to pay homage to their own--the twenty-three Adair County soldiers who had fallen during the Great War, now called World War One.

CASEY ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL PATTY JONES, at right, talks with educators, from left, Pam Giesselhardt, Darlene Campbell and Laura Murrell with her daughter Anna, as they prepare for Tuesday night's meeting. Casey was the host for the first public forum on the proposed nickel school tax. Third grader Anna and her fellow CWC students know why the tax is important every time they have to step around a bucket in their path catching water from the leaking roof, or discover a snake in their school because of holes in the foundation of the building which was constructed in the 1960s.

Adair County Fiscal Court report, November 8, 2005 meeting

Garbage haulers think prices will have to go up about $2-3 because of new transfer station contract. Two magistrates balk at giving more money to Industrial Development. Larry Legg re-appointed as Water District Trustee. Court votes to hire Johnny Morgan to trim Jamestown Street side tree. Ben Smith Road gets 25 MPH limit.
Two items which weren't expected to be controversial at the November 8, 2005, regular monthly meeting proved to be so. One was garbage. The other was in "court orders."

The court approved a contract with Mid-State Waste (MSW), Glasgow, KY, to operate the Adair County Transfer Station. Only one bid was submitted. And the cost, $37.83 per ton, may cause garbage rates to go up as much as $2 or more a month, one hauler said.
