Darlene Brock Bardin's photograph sparks memories of home and family

Beautiful creek brings on memories of parents, Clarence and Esther Keltner Brock, and the day they were married in 1942

I was out driving around in the country last week and took this beautiful picture of this creek bed. My Dad, Clarence Brock, from the Milltown community says he has always heard it called Cool Spring Branch. He said some people called it Barley Fork.

Clarence and Esther Keltner Brock married in 1942



2005-11-02 - Columbia, KY - Photo Darlene Brock. ESTHER and CLARENCE BROCK were married on March 14, 1942 and raised nine children in the Milltown community. On their wedding night, Clarence carried his new bride across a creek, known to him as Cool Spring Branch. The memories of the wedding date and the stream were sparked when daughter Darlene took a photograph.

There will be a Special Called School Board Meeting, Tuesday, November 8, 2005, at 6:00 p.m., at the Colonel William Casey Elementary School cafeteria for the purpose of a public forum to address questions and concerns on the proposed nickel tax.

Edna M. Sexton, 87, retired from Osh'Kosh

Services will be held Saturday, November 5, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home for Edna Sexton. She is a former resident of Weed-Sparksville Road in Columbia and a member of the Leatherwood Baptist Church. She was a retired machine operator at Osh'Kosh.Mrs. Sexton was the widow of Loren C. Sexton who preceded her in death in 1996. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Birbie England Compton.

Columbia Police Department receives Thermal Imaging Device

Chief Mark Harris gets training in Washington, DC, to use the $14,000 instrument, which will be used in search and rescue operations, criminal investigations
The Columbia Police Department received a Commercial Direct Assistance Program (CEDAP) grant sponsored and funded by the office of Homeland Security.

The grant was for a Thermal Imager with a value of $14,000.

Free nutrition classes and prize drawings begin Tuesday at Adult Ed

A chance to learn nutrition and also to win prizes begins at Adult Ed on Tuesday, November 8
November is Nutrition Month and the Adair County Adult Education Program is hosting a free Family Nutrition class begining Tuesday, November 8 at their location in the little gray house beside the old ACHS building.

Adair unemployment rate tied for 11th lowest in Kentucky

Chart shows Adair County at top of Lake Cumberland Area Development District; above both state and national averages. Flip side is that, overall, unemployment is up

Adair County is leading the 10-county Lake Cumberland Area with the lowest unemployment in the district for September 2005, the latest period for which the figures are available.

As well, the county's 4.7% rate is better than any of the surrounding county's, including Metcalfe, is below the United States average of 4.8%, and well below the statewide average of 5.3% for the month of September.Only 10 counties in Kentucky had better figures. Adair County's 4.7% rate was tied with three other counties for 11th place in the Commonwealth.

UPDATED: Utilities commission lifts Boil Water Advisory

UPDATE: All clear! Jim Williams has notified us that the Boil Water Advisory was lifted at 1:45, Wednesday, November 2, 2005

Jim Williams, Director of the Columbia Utilities Commission, said this morning that he hopes a Boiled Water Advisory for a small section of businesses on Jamestown Hill to be lifted at around noon. The advisory was issued on Tuesday, November 1, 2005, in the afternoon.

Two dead after attempt to pass tractor-trailer truck ends with 3-car accident

Marcie K. Harris and Elsie Bailey pronounced dead at the scene; Paul Lakins airlifted to UL Hospital; KSP Trooper Toby Young, Columbia Post 15, investigates crash
A three-car accident between Campbellsville and Lebanon which started with an attempt by one driver to pass a tractor-trailer truck has resulted in the death of two people and the airlifting of a third to the University of Louisville Hospital. A fourth person involved was not injured.
