Planning & Zoning Commission approves zoning change for 502 Jamestown ST with three member quorum; Commissioner Allender absent; Commissioner Bradshaw had financial interest in matter, could not sit for hearing, meeting. Next step for zone change is City Council
Less than two hours ago, Aaron Mortgage Company advance a big step closer to moving their mortgage brokering business from Madison Square on Burkesville Street to 502 Jamestown Street.

Kessler Brothers all smiles following P&Z recommendation

Eddie Kessler, left, and brother Donald Kessler who own Aaron Mortgage Co., Columbia, KY, with their brother Kevin Kessler, were all smiles following a victory at the Columbia Planning & Zoning Commission hearing and meeting Thursday night, October 6, 2005. The P&Z approved a request for a zoning change at 502 Jamestown Street, which, when approved by City Council, will mean they can move Aaron Mortgage Co. to larger, more convenient offices on Jamestown Hill. Donald Kessler acted as spokesman for the company at the hearing.

Bertha Taylor, 92, former owner of Jiffy Castle Restaurant

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, October 8, 2005 at 1 p.m. at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home for Bertha Taylor who died Wednesday in Paris, Tennessee. She was the daughter of the late Curtis and Ida Lee Wheat Roach and was the widow of James Hobert Taylor, Sr., who preceded her in death in 1970.

Helen Kemp, 95

Helen Kemp, 95, of Cedar St, Columbia, KY, formerly of Summit, IL, died Wednesday, October 5, 2005, at 7:55 p.m., at Summit Manor Nursing Home, Columbia, KY.

The funeral service will be Saturday, October 8, 2005, at 10:00 a.m., at Grissom Funeral Home, with Bro. Herbert Janes officiating.

Lindsey Wilson College celebrates ties to United Methodist Church

In addition to its affiliation with the United Methodist Church, Lindsey Wilson has holds weekly chapel services, has a three member dean of chapel office, offers a degree in Christian Ministeries, and maintains a spiritual life program

COLUMBIA, KY. October 5, 2005 - Members of the Lindsey Wilson College community gathered Wednesday in V.P. Henry Auditorium to celebrate the college's relationship with The United Methodist Church.

The special ceremony including readings by members of the college's executive staff, hymns performed by the Lindsey Wilson Singers and Brazilian String Ensemble and special message from LWC President William T. Luckey Jr.

Adair Schools Fall Break is October 10-14, 2005

The Adair County Schools will be on Fall Break all next week, beginning with Monday, October 10, 2005, and continuing through Friday, October 14, 2005.

Classes will resume Monday, October 17, 2005.

52-year-old Liletown man, Austin Ray Jones, dies in fire

KSP Post 15 in Columbia reports that at 1:30 a.m. on the morning of October 5, 2005 a structure fire occurred fourteen miles west of Greensburg which took the life of 52-year-old Austin Ray Jones.

LETTER: Adair Marching Band after 16th State Championship this year

Russell County's Contest ended the band's regular season. So we enter the tournament phase of competition for State.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW: Roy G. Barnes, Millerfield native and new author

"One moment stands out in my mind as the main reason I left Adair County and went north to find work -- I heard our local country store owner tell a patron that he wouldn't extend any more credit because the man sold his crop, and, 'instead of settling up your charges here, you went to Columbia and shopped.' "

Roy Barnes, son of the late Olie and Lola Foley Barnes, has written a book entitled: A Journey from Slingshots and Marbles to Bottom Lines in which he recalls life as a child in the Millerfield community of Adair County.

When he was ten years old, his mother, age 34, passed away. By necessity, that left Roy, the oldest, as caregiver and protector of his four younger sisters and three-month-old brother while his dad worked for the WPA building roads.

Next ACHS Band competition is on Saturday, October 15, 2005

Band travels to Madisonville for Class AA Regionals at Hopkins Co. Central HS
The championship Adair County Marching Band will compete in three more events this year, culminating with the Bands of America Grand Nationals in Indianapolis at RCA Dome, November 10-12, 2005.
