First Westlake Health Fair is Saturday in Casey County

Westlake Regional Hospital announces their first health fair of the season at Casey County Hospital and Primary Care. The event will be held from 7 a.m. until noon on Saturday, September 10, at the Casey County Hospital in Liberty.

Scenic Adair County: Ironweed



2005-09-04 - Union Community, west of Bliss, east of Gradyville, KY - Photo Staff. Ironweed may be the most beautiful flower in Kentucky as this flower adorned fence post at our place in the old Union Community, between Bliss and Gradyville, suggests. Might oughta be the state flower. Some fields in Adair County are solid with the purple flowers at this time of the year. Ironweed plants have great utility. Kids, at least in the old days, put them to great use: Making newspaper kites, building ironweed-and-thatch teepees, and fashioning them into spears. On the other hand, the UK Extension Service calls ironweed the most troublesome and the third most common weed in grass pastures, and offers several methods to murder them. On another hand, the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission lists ironweed varieties, Vernonia baldwinii (ironweed, western ironweed), and Vernonia fasciculata (ironweed) as recommended flora for roadside use of native plants. On the fourth hand, the University of Kentucky Department of Entomology recommends the plant for use in creating butterfly gardens. Motorcyclist admitted to Russell County Hospital following Saturday evening accident

Darren Lee Andrew, 24, was admitted to the Russell County Hospital in Russell Springs following a motorcycle accident which occurred two miles west of Russell Springs on Highway 1870.

Emogene Miller, 70, retired Cundiff merchant

Emogene Miller, 70, 2776 Melson Ridge Road, Columbia, KY (the Cundiff community), died Saturday, September 3, 2005, at 10:00 a.m., at her residence.

The memorial service will be Monday, September 5, 2005, at 4:30 p.m., at the Shearer Cemetery with Bro. Buford Hadley officiating. Grissom Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
