Tourism is Economic Development Special to ColumbiaMagazine.com Economic development had traditionally focused on industrial and manufacturing based business for expansion of the local community's tax base, often overlooking tourism as another viable tax base coordinator. Sue Stivers, Chairperson of the Columbia-Adair County Tourism Commission and Executive Director of the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce said, "Many people view tourism's contribution to a community elusive because it is not characterized by large fleets of trucks, huge warehouses and factory buildings." Adair Co. Schools one of 10 districts to share in $1 million Leadership Grant The U.S. Department of Education has awarded a 2005 School Leadership Program grant to the Green River Regional Educational Cooperative (GRREC) on behalf of 10 area school districts, including Adair County. The award to the GRECC is $1,058,722, and is one of only 24 given in the nation. Superintendent of Adair County Schools Darrell Treece and Grant Writer for Adair County Schools Sammy Taylor said they are very very excited that Adair County is one of the school districts receiving this grant. "It will help the best qualified candidates to be leaders in our schools," Mr. Treece said.
