14-year-old Casey County bicyclist dies of injuries

A 14-year-old Casey Co girl died this morning, Wednesday, August 24, at 9:50 a.m. Eastern time at the University of Kentucky Medical Center as a result of injuries sustained on Saturday, August 20, 2005, 14 miles south of Liberty on Ky 837.

Re-enactment: Walking the Ledge

Jake and Blake Cowan use opposite techniques to hug the brick wall while re-enacting the one-time popular Columbia tradition of Walking the Ledge off the Square on Jamestown Street. The boys' grandmother, Fay McKinley, remembers the best way for Walking the Ledge was to walk it barefoot. Hardly anyone walks the ledge anymore. It is not recommended, and should never to attempted without proper permission and supervision. But in Columbia's distant past, Walking the Ledge was a required element of every Jamestown Hill child's trek home. Giles Foundation announces annual Arts and Crafts Festival

If you love arts and crafts and fine local food, music and good stories, you're in for a treat.
In northern Adair County, in the litle town of Knifley, the Janice Holt Giles and Henry Giles Arts and Crafts Festival will be open to all on Saturday, October 1, 2005. It will be held in the restored log cabin where Janice and Henry Giles wrote their famous books.

Coping with the fuel price crisis: 4-day school week?

Webster County, KY, school system says idea working well

Coping with the high price of fuel has been the major topic for businesses, commuters, and especially for rural school districts.

At least one Kentucky School system, Webster County, has instituted a four-day school week. The Dixon, KY, system, located in Western Kentucky, added instructional time on each of the four days in the new schedule.

Springfield woman in stable condition being struck by hit-and-run driver

A Springfield, KY, woman was listed in serious but stable condition at UK Medical Center after being airlifted there after being struck by a car.

The accident occurred at 8:47 p.m., Monday, August 22, 2005 on Lebanon Hill, Springfield.

Adair Co. Extension Agent: Beef herd expansion continues

COLUMBIA, KY. (AUGUST 23, 2005) On July 22nd USDA released its semi-annual estimate of the U.S. cattle inventory. For the most part, estimates came in quite close to expectations. Total cattle and calf numbers were estimated to be 104.5 million, just shy of 1% above the 2004 estimate. The number of beef cows in the U.S. herd was estimated to be up 0.75% from last year at 33.75 million cows.
