Tractor Man gets advice on Oil and Gas Maps

About: Wants to know availability of Adair Co KY oil maps To ColumbiaMagazine.com:
Google "Ky oil and gas." You should come up with an Oil and Gas Map Portal. Although the last couple of times I have tried to view the site, it was not working, it is still the only game in town of which I am aware.

About: In just 64 hours The Band heads for New York CIty

To Shamarie Claiborne, c/o CM

Great story, Shamarie. Thanks for sharing it. I'm glad so many experiences are included for the students. I think this trip will have many benefits for students' overall education and appreciation for what's been planned and made available for them. I can't even imagine all the time and planning that went into making these arrangements!

I appreciate having this website to keep us all updated. Your photos will be a permanent record that can be accessed throughout the years.

Wants to know availability of Adair Co., KY oil maps

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Is there a public document showing the location of oil wells in Adair County? Curious to know how many and in what geologic layers. Wouldn't it be awful to dig a well for water and hit oil!

Mark Willis recalls using Jeffries Building fire escape

About: Downtown Details: Fire Escape

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Back in the 80's, I locked myself upstairs in the old Jeffries Building by accident. I was on the second floor back behind Dr. Randall's office in some rooms that we had set up some weight lifting equipment in when this happened. I went out the window that is at the top of the steps of this fire escape and started down it. It very slowly started to go down till I was all the way down and on the sidewalk, then it very slowly went back up to it where it was to begin with.

Writer has no children, but urges vote for tax for the kids

About: The difference $21 per person per year can make

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I've never been blessed with children, but that doesn't mean I don't love watching them grow. I am more than willing to help them in anyway I can. They are our future. We should be proud of our county and our children! We all have nieces, nephews and grandchildren. There is nothing no more precious then our kids. Like I said, I don't have any, but I love them everyone. So people, please reconsider this tax and vote for it!

Letter: More on the bungalow

About: http://www.columbiamagazine.com/photoarchive.php?photo_id=32635>Postcard House Possible Match

Ann Curtis writes:
Dear Pen,

Thanks for helping to identify the "J. O. Russell" bungalow! (Another CM reader also thought this was the house.)

Mr. Russell built the Russell Building on the Square in 1909 (corner Jamestown St. & Square). I wonder what year he built his "bungalow?" Mr. Russell's wife, "Miss Kizzie," donated the grand entrance to the old Columbia Cemetery. The gates to that entrance have now been installed at the Trabue House (coincidentally just two doors down from the Russell's "bungalow.")

Thanks so much for taking this photo!

Letter: Reason Pipes Were Painted Red

About: Downtown Details Jefferson Alley

Jelaine Harlow writes:
If my memory serves me correctly the pipes in this photo were painted red several years ago when my late husband Billy Phillips and his son painted the bank. The reasoning behind this, and correct me, Robert Flowers if I am wrong, was to bring attention to them in the narrow alley so drivers would be less likely to hit them.

Reader asks how much is enough for schools

About: The difference 21 per person per year can make

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

All I hear is how much it will cost on an average, enough. How much is it going to cost each one of us. I am a business owner and have talked to several people and one person who is a big property owner told me it would make $4,000.00 difference in his taxes; and, yes, I said "difference."

In today's aconomy people are just making ends meet; that is, people that work for a living. There are a lot of exploded salaries in the county, but for people that work for a living, and I speak for me and several people, we are taxed to death.

This country was founded on taxation without representation and look what we have become. Something I would like posted for every one to see is how much tax dollars are collected in Adair County for the school on utility bills alone. I have asked a few people and no answer. If you post this or not is up to you and I am not trying to make anybody upset.

Just telling my side and asking how much $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ is enough. Thank you.

s/Larry Foster, Jr.

Thanks for your comment. You're right. A person with approximately $8,000,000 (Eight Million Dollars) in property assessment in Adair County would pay $4,000 difference in taxes if the tax needed to get a new Col. Wm Casey school wins on the ballot. If your assessment is in the $70,000 range, however, it will cost approximately $35 more, per year, in taxes. The amount of money collected by the school board and spent by the school board is public record. The office isn't open at this time (Sunday afternoon) so we can't answer your question on utilities tax, but it easy to get during business hours. Thanks for stating your position in a courteous manner. -EW

CWC: Is it fair for everyone to have to pay for better school building

About: The difference $21 per person per year can make

Eddie:

What about those of us that don't have kids in Adair County Schools? Is it fair for me to  pay taxes for something that does not or will never apply to me or my family or is the act of a local socialist goverment? And I will do as dictated by those who look to the poor and middle class to support their lifestyles.

s/1SG (ret) JIm Beard

Thanks, as always, for adding your comments on CM. Your question is on the mind of a lot of people who don't have kids. Many people may have felt that way at first, until they looked at what would happen to the whole economy if we don't do the best we can the kids, and many of them find the tax worth the sacrifice. Some who signed the petition are changing their minds, we hear. And some who've taken a second look at the tax find that it isn't falling unfairly on the poor and middle class, but on the very wealthy, who will paying 100's of times what the poor and middle class will pay for the new schools -EW

Writer agrees: CWC would be 48 years old

About: Writer clarifies age of Col Casey School It is 48 years old

I think that 48 years old is the correct age because we attended first grade at the old school up on the hill and started second grade in the brand new CWC.

Writer clarifies age of Col. Casey School: It is 48 years old

About: The difference $21 per person per year can make

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I do not believe Col. William Casey school is 60 years old as the notation under the pictures indicates. I believe it was opened in 1961, give or take one year.

s/Jim Hudson

Thanks. This sounds right, to me to. Until someone tells us better, we'll change the caption to indicate 48 year old school. It is showing its age. -EW

And a call to all to remember Veterans this day
New City of Columbia sign on Burkesville RD

To ColumbiaMagazine:

Thanks for the news I am able to read daily on my computer here in Florida. Pat Bell has been great for Columbia and our area of Kentucky. His leadership has made it a much better place to live, raise our children, and enjoy life in a great state and country.

Today is Veterans Day, and I would like to thank all the veterans who have sacrificed so much so we can live in a country freely.

I have served and a lot of others have and the veterans are the ones who have made this freedom possible.
