The Race is on... I have three days left to pack two boys and myself for the adventure of a life time. Truth be known, I am a little stressed but excited at the same time. So many things to take care of before I leave to ensure there is a place to come home to, coupled with the stress of does everybody have everything they need, has made for an interesting week in and of itself.

Metcalfe/Monroe Co. road to Tennesee moves into design phase

New work on KY 163/Tompkinsville RD, along with the coming new interchange of US 68/Greensburg RD at the Louie B. Nunn, will dramatically improve highway travel between Adair County and Metcalfe and Monroe Counties -CM

By Kiersten Jaggers, KY Department of Highways

BOWLING GREEN, KY - Serving as the primary north-south connector for south Metcalfe County, KY 163 begins at the Tennessee state line and travels northward through Monroe County to intersect with US 68 in Edmonton, linking Monroe and Metcalfe counties to the broader highway network of the Commonwealth.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet conducted a planning study in 2007 that included an analysis of conditions along KY 163, US 68, and KY 80. Funds have since been provided for design of two projects developed from that study - a new interchange of US 68 with the Cumberland Parkway east of Edmonton, and a western bypass around Edmonton - as well as five spot improvements and two bridge replacements along KY 163 between Edmonton and KY 90. There is not yet funding for right of way acquisition, utility relocation or construction.

Chuck Hinman IJMA No. 327:
The Sower Atop Nebraska's Capitol Building

Robert Stone saw the photograph by Tim Loy of Columbia, entitled Travel: The Sower atop Nebraska capitol and recalled an article by Chuck Hinman about the statue. It's a wonderful complement to the photo, and is posted below.

Anyone who has not seen Nebraska's imposing capitol building in Lincoln wouldn't believe the magnificence of this structure. It is considered one of the world's greatest architectural achievements. It is indeed an inspiring monument for Nebraskans especially. It is a hidden treasure and of all places, it is in Nebraska, state of my birth and beginning!

In 1908, Columbia faced a crossroads, and chose wisely

"If you have plenty of money and no children, count it a God given privilege to help bear the burdens of others." -Elder Z.T. Williams
By "Jim"

In the fall of 1908, voters in the Columbia school district faced a distinct choice in a late November special election: they could vote in favor of a graded school (and by extension, a state-mandated high school open to all Adair Countians) and the resulting increase in school tax, or they could vote to reject the measure out-of-hand.

The debate raged in Columbia from early summer until the election, with passion and persuasion flowing from both sides of the issue. In the forepart of July 1908, then-retired Judge Herschel Clay Baker penned a letter to the News in which he supported the measure, a letter which he concluded by stating:
"The alternative is before us. Which shall it be? I am a tax payer and have no children to educate, but it seems to me our duty is plain."
In another letter which appeared in the News 101 years ago yesterday, (November 18th), Eld. Z.T. Williams, a former businessman and educator who by then was the much-beloved minister of the Columbia Christian Church, eloquently echoed Judge Baker's sentiment in this gentle admonition:
"Let every citizen consider well what the present opportunity means to the future upbuilding of the town. If we would keep apace with our neighboring towns, and with the demand for a higher and more universal education of the future generations, we must avail ourselves of these modern and better advantages. Don't vote against the measure because of the little money it may cost you. We can not have advancement on any line without money. If you have plenty of money and no children, count it a God given privilege to help bear the burdens of others. 'Bear ye one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.'' (The quotation Eld. Williams used comes from Galatians 6:2.)
The last edition of the News before the election stated that "in our judgment the race will be very close" -- and close it was. The vote tally wasn't reported; rather, the News simply stated that despite inclement weather, "a good vote was polled for and against the Graded School proposition...[and] the district is now committed to the proposition by twenty-seven majority" – 27 voters who laid the foundation of the modern public education system in Adair County.

Commends Columbia Womans Club endorsement

About: Columbia Woman's Club supports new building for CWC

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

My hat is off this morning to the Columbia Woman's Club and the Citizens of Adair County who support the advancement of education in Adair County. Now there's only one thing remaining and that is to vote on December 15, 2009.

s/Terry Partin

It isn't unexpected from an organization which has always provided such leadership for Adair County. At times like these, it is encouraging to see respected Adair Countians speak out. In the past, such courage has often served us well, just as your own courage in writing this letter will embolden others who may have been too timid to stand up and speak out. -EW

Frankfort/Fairplay reader sees hope after disappointment in CM

About: BRBB Four bears spotted this past week in Adair Co KY

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Great bear sightings story. I have been somewhat disappointed by the lack of Bear Board reporting. Perhaps Mr. Fudge will re-energize the organization. You just can't hardly get coverage of bears and chicken hawks anywhere but on CM. Keep up the good work.

s/Dave Rosenbaum

Thanks Bro. Dave.

The criticism of CM is well taken. We do promise to do better.

Mr. Fudge is showing the kind of leadership that Dean Gary Coomer and I find refreshing. Dean Johnny Vaughn of the Adair Assimilation Academy (AAAcad) has commented that not only is Young Fudge a very knowlegeable boy, he is strictly honest, a strict requirement for BRBB membership, too, albeit a little naive when it comes to playing around with 35 pound bobcats.

It appears you are the only resident not running for public office! Would be nice to have a picture of the candidates and the progressive "Change" they promise to make. I prefer to see campaign promises in writing. Educate me within reason on the campaign issues and candidates.

Thanks. The statements and photos of the candidates are coming soon to a computer near you. We will be posting them between now and January 31, 2010, along with the candidates' photos. They will be posted, pretty soon now.-EW

Anyone have knowledge of Beard Refuge near Coburg?

Among the many inquiries about Columbia and Adair County and the Day Trip opportunities using Columbia as the starting point, Sue Stivers fields most with her store of knowledge of the area or with a flick of her computer mouse to find the answer, but a question about the "Beard Refuge near Coburg, KY," has her stumped. John MacGregor of the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Department, # 1 Sportsman's Lane, Frankfort, KY, wrote her the following on Wednesday, November 18, 2009:
I am trying to assemble and map historical distribution data for Kentucky's amphibians and reptiles.

The zoological collections at the University of Kentucky included numerous salamanders and frogs that were captured at "Beard Refuge near Coburg" in the early 1950s by Dr. Roger W. Barbour and some of his students. Dr. Barbour passed away a number of years ago. I have been trying for some time to figure out where the Beard Refuge may have been located - I suspect that it may have been a piece of private land that was used by local scout groups in the 1950s as a camping area.

Could you possibly suggest anyone in the Adair County area who might remember this place, or might know where it was located?

Thank you very much.
Any help will be greatly appreciated, by contacting Sue Stivers directly at (270) 384-6020, or by sharing the information, which will be passed along, with readers of ColumbiaMagazine.com by using the Comments button with this article.

Great American Smokeout is today, Nov. 19, 2009

By Jelaine Harlow

The Great American Smokeout is a day set aside to encourage smokers to quit for good, quit for a day or make plans to quit. By giving up tobacco, smokers take an important step toward improving their health, lowering their cancer risk and creating more birthdays!

Columbia has several smoke free restaurants and businesses and some that participate in the smoke out each year. If you visit one of these restaurants say thanks for a smoke free environment.

Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the U.S. Cigarette smoking accounts for about 443,000 pre-mature deaths-including 49,400 in nonsmokers from second hand smoke.<
