Knifley, KY reader delves into a mystery in her community

About: COF cites Shakespeare on value of dilatory time
To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I have asked you before who COF of Knifley is but have not got an answer.

I , and many others would like to know who this person is. Since we don't gather at Arnolds or Bakers, we would like to know who is speaking for us or against us. I agree on the new school building.

I would like to know who is looking over Knifley. Please give him my e-mail address and send him or her this note....

Thank you.

s/Sue Perkins Thanks, Sue Perkins. What's in a name. The COF, by any other name, is still the COF. The COF has identified himself (he speaks oft of his wife) as The Crusty Ol' Fool. I will forward your email to him, and he will contact you if need be. Just for the record: He is not Wendell Rainwater, Charles Patterson, Darrell Baker or the ghost of John Dunbar, nor is he any of the Keith Livermores. CM

(ADV) Patty Bunch at Ole Town Cafe, Knifley, KY tonight

I, Patty Dixon Bunch, would like to invite all my friends, family, and Knifley Grade School classmates to come join me Saturday night, April 18, 2009, at the Ole Town Cafe, 12190 Knifley RD, Knifley, KY. I have been invited to come sing. Since that was my first stage as a very young child, I am very excited to go back and sing again.

I hope to have my sisters and maybe more of my family come sing with me for a fews songs. I know we are in for a good time.

Randy and his wife would love for you to have supper, but it's not a requirement. Come by and pull up a chair and visit with us for a while.

The Ole Town Cafe is the converted Knifley Grade Center and is located on KY 551 about 15 miles out of Columbia. I hope to see you Saturday night! -PATTY DIXON BUNCH

From Knifley, KY from Spain: Perils of Big Dog Ownership

PROLOGUE TO SAD STORY WITH MORAL: "For some reason I apparently sent the photo's of the new dog out via g mail in January I discovered this when I routinely checked for g mail yesterday and discovered a lot of two month old replies/comments. Thought a follow-up might be in order."-RICHARD HOVIOUS, Knifleyan in Madrid
About: "Richard Hovious & his French Beauceron in Madrid"

A report from Iberia, from member of the great Adair County Diaspora

A Big Dawg-caused Disastrophy

A couple of days after I sent the photo's out I had Beauce out for his early morning tour.

He stopped to deposit across the driveway from one of our local churches. Something scared him. He reached Mach 2 immediately and managed to avoid the church.

Gas price hits $3.99; is it time to think of busses?

Has anybody considered a shuttle bus service?

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Gas prices in Russell Springs hit $3.99 yesterday afternoon.

Has anyone considered the possibility of a bus or shuttle service for our area.

If you consider the traffic flow on Greenhills Road...we are really going a lot from Columbia to Russell Springs. Once the bridge finally opens it is a straight shot up Highway 80. A bus route from the Wal-Mart parking lot to Russell Springs and maybe one going to Campbellsville, as well.

It sure is something to think about with these gas prices...I have cut back on my driving as much as possible.  And I am now recycling our trash.  I'm trying to do my part!

Sleeping COF gets tangled up in Union suit, but tragedy averted

Wherein COF sends Sunday epistle with a moral. COF admits learning a lesson in domestic relations after waking up from nightmare caused by getting tangled up in Union suit, the requisite nightwear in Arctic Knifley, Adair County's nearest major city to the North Pole. Reprinted here in ancient Nifleean dialect, neither added to or taken from, just as it was handed down from on high.

Wild teenagers identified by their strange attire

COF writes from Knifley:

Earlier this year we had Rose Breasted Grosbeaks at the feeders. Today I saw an apparition! This avian was approx 8 inches with a grosbeak type bill. The head was identical to a female being brown with prominent white streaks running over the eyes and down the neck but the body was almost that of a male grosbeak. The back was black with some white streaks and the underside was pure white with a triangular crest. However, the crest was orange, like a Robin's breast rather than the rose patch. Please tell me that this was a mutant or a species not in my "Birds of Kentucky Field Guide." The alternative is that Miz Emily is right again - I'm just a Crusty Ole Fool that gets confused entirely too easily.

Weather lore interesting, but Knifleyans more scientific

About: Link: Byron Crawford has serious winter weather forecasting

To the Editor, ColumbiaMagazine.com:

The link to Byron Crawford's piece about weather predictions was interesting but that folk lorical stuff needs to be taken with a grain, or sometimes a whole shaker of salt.

On the other hand, Miz Emily has developed her own scientificul prognostications based on recent observations:

COF has encounter with man from Duluth

A great essay by The COF
From high above downtown Knifley or Knife-ly; either way, a beautiful, veritable paradise, located the center of the universe, the Eden of Planet Earth, District 6, Adair County, KY. (U.S. of A.)

This tale is a time in the telling.  When you finish it I think you will understand why it took a while to go public!

Having some business on the square in Columbia, that quaint bedroom community of the Knifley metropolis, I mistakenly traveled without the confines and constraints of Miz Emily.

Having completed the task at hand, I decided to stop at Catfish Plus on the way home.  As usual the place was crowded so I took my meal and headed to the picnic tables under the shade tree in back.

Frank Dickerson thinks school board records will have answer

re: The Lost Year of Knifley HS 1952-1953
To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Mr. Doss raises a good question about the 1952~1953 Knifley HS Class.  I don't have the answer, but the Adair Board of Education's meticulous records should reveal the answer.

Important historical events need to be addressed, so let's hear it from the Board of Education.

Thanks!

Gerald Doss, former Pellytonian but late of Columbia, KY is concerned about an apparently lost year at Knifley High School.

Kim Perkins solves mystery in 1948 KHS senior trip photo

To the editor, CM

I know who the "unknown person" in the Knifley High School Senior trip photo is--it's my Mom--Ludora Feese Perkins.  She is standing next to her sister, Maudie Feese.

She was not a member of this class. She was a driver of one of the vehicles on this field trip.

The Bottomses: Richard Hovious spots huge gap in Veterans List

Knifley's Marion and Ider Bottoms had four sons who served in World War II. Writer remembers the day at Knifley HIgh School when news came of Edward's death. When he was killed in action
By Richard Hovious

I just noticed a rather large group missing from the veterans list: Janice Holt Giles wrote extensively about Marion and Ider Bottoms in 40 Acres and No Mule (Pages148-154).

Marion and Ider (both good friends) had four sons who served in WWII---Janice writes a lot about Edward, who was killed in action (Herman Chelf was at his side when this happened), Robert Bottoms ("Humpy") and Jackie and Jimmy (twins) also served in WWII.
