CWC: Age of old building makes maintenance too expensive

About: No problem with tax but questions maintenance policy

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I would like to address the questions concerning maintenance at Colonel William Casey Elementary School. When I came to Adair County in 2003, my first meeting was with the Local Facility Planning Committee that must develop a facility needs plan for the district every 4 years. The architect that reviewed all the facilities for the district gave a detailed list of areas that needed to be replaced or updated. The total cost in 2003 was $7.3M. In 2007, a different architect did not even give a figure but just recommended replacement.

Col. Wm. Casey School is in dire need of replacement

Temperatures can't be regulated. The building has leaks. Mobile Units lose power. Electrical system won't support Whiteboards. "The bigger picture is that we have a great school at Col. Wm. Casey, but we house it in an inadequate building," Patty Jones says. Funds must be provided for an adequate building to provide the education Adair County kids need to compete in the 21st Century

By Patty Jones, Principal, Col. Wm. Casey Elementary School

As principal of Col. Wm. Casey Elementary School it would only stand to reason that I am strongly in favor of the additional funds to allow construction to begin on a new elementary school. It is true that I see firsthand on a daily basis the many reasons a new school for our district is needed. Just in the past week the students and staff at Casey have had to deal with several common problems.

Adair School Bd. meeting report October 28, 20009

In last night's school board meeting
  • Board votes unanimously to fight for Nickel Tax. All out campaign promised. Opponents won't be demonized, but facts to be brought to public with every possible means.
  • Story in progress. More later

By Ed Waggener

Acting unanimously on the recommendation of Superintendent Darrell Treece, the Adair County School Board has officially voted to put the question of the Nickel Tax to a vote in a special election should that be necessary if the tax recall petition has the 755 valid signatures needed to force a board decision on the recall.

The vote was 5-0 to fight for the tax, which, school officials say, is the key to financing badly needed new school facilities with the cost to the county.

Board of Education faces issues on tax recall

By Darrell Treece, Superintendent, Adair Co. Schools

Assuming 755 of the 1600 signatures on the nickel Recall Petition are certified (which is almost a certainty), the Board of Education will have to make the decision of what to do about putting the issue on the ballot. They have 3 options:
  1. Rescind the tax
  2. Have it put on the ballot for the November 2, 2010, or
  3. Have a special election (at Board expense) to decide the issue this fall.
During the past 45 days, we have started the task of providing the facts on the issue to the public.
