A question about Major Movie filmed in Adair County

About: One Major Movie Was Filmed In Adair County

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:
I just found this article and was just wondering about the setting of this movie. I watched about 30 minutes of this movie on YouTube because I can't find it anywhere else and the setting doesn't seem like it was filmed in Adair County. Also, Wikipedia says in was filmed mostly in Greenfield, Iowa, and doesn't say anything about Kentucky. Was some of the movie shot in Columbia? The article made it seem like it was shot all in Adair County.

s/Joey Bennett

It was almost entirely shot in Adair County--Adair County, Iowa.. That information is in the very brief article in the ColumbiaMagazine.com Movies edition, but I can understand how it was overlooked. Greenfield, IA, is the county seat of Adair County Iowa, one of four counties in the United States carrying the name. Another is Adair County, MO, in northeastern Missouri, whose county seat is Kirksville, and is the home of the American Osteopathic Association's medical school. The last time I checked, 23 years ago, there were about 80 physicians in the town, all but two D.O.'s. The fourth Adair County is Adair County, OK, whose county seat is Stillwell; Adair Co., OK, is the only one of the four Adair Counties not named for Gen. John Adair. -Ed Waggener

Remembers Mary Agnes Theatre in Jamestown, KY

About: "The Strand in Jamestown KY. The Star in Russell Springs KY

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I am 71 years old, and I remember going to the Strand theater in Russell Springs, it was down the street from where the Star is today. I don't think the Strand building is still standing. There was a fire in that block in the past.

The theater in Jamestown, which I remember as well, was called the Mary Agnes.

I'm sure other readers will remember, possibly better than I.

Good photos, I enjoyed seeing them.

Russell Co., KY, historian pinpoints date of Star Theatre photo

See related: The Strand in Jamestown; The Star in Russell Springs" by Kyle Hadley
Jim Garner research pinpoints date of old photograph of 60 year old Star Theater in Russell Springs at between mid-December, 1949, and mid-February, 1950; gives origin of name of "Mary Agnes Theatre" in Jamestown, KY; and adds comment on famed Lake-Trail Drive-In in Mid-town

From Jim Garner

Russell County historian Jim Garner sent the following information gleaned from old newspapers in Russell County, KY:

Plans for a new theatre in Russell Springs were announced in the April 8, 1948 edition of the Russell County News

The article stated the theatre would "be constructed in the center of the business section, where the old post office [and Blue Grill] stood"and noted that the theatre would be built by Mr. A.V. Luttrell, "owner and manager of the Strand Theatre at Russell Springs... Completion of the new theatre will give Mr. Luttrell two theatres in Russell Springs." The article also revealed the name originally picked, the Russell Theatre, and stated that the Russell "seems very appropriate, in honor of our county and the mineral springs in Russell Springs."

In June 25, 2008 you posted a photo #27520 of the Strand theater and Star Theater. Here's some information on the photos. Hope it helps. The top is the old Strand Theater, which was located on the square in Jamestown and the Star was built to replace it.

This is the oldest photo of the Star that I have found. It was taken before the Star opened probably in Fall 1949 because the Star opened on in 1950.

Jonathan Moore reports in, at long last, from Los Angeles, CA

Greensburg, and Columbia, KY, film director/producer reports in on continuing projects; his last filming project here was in 2001, when he was filming a story by Kentucky author Chris Offutt at Gradyville, KY. He still has plans for Kentucky based documentaries and feature films. Plus, he sends a memory of the Circle R.

Mr. Waggener,

Greetings from Los Angeles once again. I hope this note finds you, Adair County and all the rest of Kentucky enjoying a beautiful spring. Life for me is busy, but good, here in southern California. I am finishing up my second year of full-time teaching at Vanguard University, and I am eagerly awaiting the coming summer vacation.
