FRANKFORT, KY - Unemployed Kentuckians who are receiving or may have already exhausted extended unemployment insurance benefits are potentially eligible for up to 20 additional weeks of benefits. Governor Steve Beshear pushed Congress for this relief earlier this year, and President Barack Obama signed the latest Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) extension into law November 6, 2009.

Gov. Beshear appoints Cumberland, Monroe Circuit Judge

Kristi Renee Castillo will fill vacancy left by resignation by Judge Steve D. Hurt

FRANKFORT, KY - Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear has appointed the Honorable Kristi Renee Castillo to the office of District Judge for the 60th Judicial District consisting of Cumberland and Monroe counties. Castillo will serve until the general election on November 2, 2010.

Castillo, of Burkesville, is currently an attorney in private practice. She previously served as the assistant Cumberland County attorney. Castillo received her Juris Doctor from the University of Louisville and her bachelor's degree from Western Kentucky University.

AoC offers new AOC Fast/Check this year

Administrative Office of the Courts encourages Kentucky schools to use new online system to speed up background checks of personnel, volunteers

FRANKFORT, KY - Kentucky school systems now have access to a new process that will greatly reduce the time required to receive the results of criminal background checks for school personnel and volunteers. School systems that use AOCFastCheck will receive their reports in days instead of weeks.

The Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts announced today that its new automated online record-check system, AOCFastCheck, is up and running in time for the start of the 2009 school year. Schools can register to use the new process immediately.

The funding is for basic and applied research, development and engineering of advanced energy storage systems.

New Home Tax Credit could Save Kentuckians thousands

ERLANGER, KY - A new tax credit goes into effect this month that could give some Kentuckians thousands of dollars back on the purchase of a new home.

The New Home Tax Credit is an individual income tax credit and applies to a "qualified buyer" who purchases a home on or after July 26, 2009 and before July 26, 2010.

Attorney General Jack Conway today announced the filing of a consumer protection lawsuit in Fayette Circuit Court against a Nevada telemarketing company for making deceptive calls concerning automobile warranties to Kentucky consumers on the Do Not Call list. The company's principal owner, Mike Bruce Moneymaker, a resident of California, was also named as a defendant in the suit.

The Attorney General is seeking a temporary injunction to prohibit the telemarketing company from making further telephone calls to Kentucky residents with phone numbers on the national Do Not Call Registry and committing other false, misleading and deceptive acts in the course of the solicitations.

Steve Beshear and the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet's Division for Air Quality (DAQ) announced that DAQ will be administering at least $1.73 million in funding for Clean School Bus programs through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009.

"This is an example of how President Obama's three pillars of education, economy and environment can come together in one initiative," Gov. Beshear said. "The Clean School Bus programs will create more than 30 jobs, benefit air quality, and reduce student absenteeism due to allergies and asthma. I encourage all of our school districts to apply for this funding."

In last week's column, I shared with you the highly-anticipated passage of Senate Bill 1 which eliminates the Commonwealth Accountability Testing System through a phase out process. The approval of this legislation heralds a new chapter in our public school systems' assessment and in the education of our children.

$44 million+ paid through KY extended jobless insurance

FRANKFORT, KY (Oct. 15, 2008) -- More than $44 million in extended unemployment insurance benefits have been paid to 20,581 Kentuckians since the program began in July 2008 and more benefits will continue to be paid out, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training in the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.

The extended 13 weeks of benefits are being paid to Kentuckians who exhausted their regular unemployment insurance benefits and are currently unemployed.

Forestry service offers Firewise tips for Fourth of July

The Kentucky Division of Forestry (KDF) reminds Kentucky landowners and homeowners that wildfires can strike any time where grass and brush are dry enough to burn. Although the frequency of wildfires lessens after Spring green-up, there is still potential for wildfire conditions.

"This is the greenest time of year with the lowest fire danger; however, we are still having forest fires. We are encouraging everyone to be extra careful this summer," said Bernie Andersen, KDF Fire Management Chief. Many summertime activities can cause accidental wildfires; however, there are precautions that can reduce the risks of spreading these fires.
