Mayor Bell finds yet another answer to high gas prices

ColumbiaMagazine.com International Desk

With a grain of salt. Photos accompany this feature.
Even when he's not working, he's working. That's all one can conclude from what Nina Nixon observed of Kentucky's No. 1 Municipal leader.

When Mayor Pat Bell went on a vacation with a LIndsey Wilson College sponsored tour group travelling to Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, he wasn't just eating exotic foods, lollygagging and gawking around. He was finding new ideas to help alleviate the gas price burden Columbians bear, Mrs. Nixon says.

By Ed Waggener

When he was a boy, Grover Cleveland Gilpin had always heard that if you visited Picadilly Circus in London and looked around, you'd see someone you know within 30 minutes.

Blake Aaron: My trip to the communist country of China

By Blake Kennedy Aaron
Contributing writer, ColumbiaMagazine.com
ZOOM! That was the sound of our, or should I say, Air China’s 747 taking off. Normally, this wouldn’t be a big deal for a big businessman but I’m not, or least I’m not yet.

A report to Adair County from the Hill Country of Thailand

By Jonathan Morris

The Book Fair
The Thursday, March 31st, 2005 installment of his column, "Observations from a Mudhut."

mood: Weary

After six weeks away from my mud hut, I finally returned last week. Everything inside the hut was, as I expected, covered with dust. That is what happens at the height of the dry season, especially in years where Thailand is reporting record droughts. At least dust is better than a leaky roof, though, so I am not complaining.

Search the world, or just Adair County, from here

How to find people and answers with new "search" option

by Linda Waggener

For those of us who don't use computers every day, surfing the internet can be frustrating. Such was the case for Charles Marshall who mentioned at church that he had tried to re-visit our photo of his little granddaughter but hadn't been able to find it again.

"I just can't run those things," Charles said of his and Yvonne's computer. It was easy to remember being at that same phase as a new internet user. So for Charles, and for any other readers who can use them, here are a few how-to steps for successful surfing:

News from Africa

LCDR Jeff Giles sent the following letter from Africa. ColumbiaMagazine sends special thanks to Jeff for his reports.

I have almost completed half of my mission in Africa and it is hard to believe I have been here for three months now. The rainy season has ended here and it is now very hot, dry and dusty. We are staying very busy doing patrols daily in the temporary security zone.

New Year's day food update

from Tom Waggener

New Year's day, for good luck, I cooked cabbage, black eyed peas and corn beef hash at our camp site (south Japan islands) and a good time was had by all.

The camp site owner lived in a broken down old bus. It almost felt like home.

Letter from Japan

From Tom Waggener,
JET Programme, Kagoshima

On the trip back to Japan after my last visit home I flew into Tokyo at 2:30 in the afternoon and then the long journey began to the southern tip of the island where I'm stationed. In domestic flights at Narita, you have to take a bus to the plane itself and on the bus there was an empty seat next to mine.

Glimpse of the Heavens, or, Thank You NASA

In the midst of tax and flu seasons, with national news focused on the uncertainties of a possible war and local news focused on gruesome local murders, it's nice to find evidence of an absolutely fantastic human achievement.

On October 15, 1997, NASA, in collaboration with space agencies from Europe, launched the Cassini spacecraft headed for Saturn by way of Jupiter, and NASA has recently posted a collection of absolutely amazing photos from that mission-in-progress.

Ode to a peach

Tom Waggener writes home from Japan

Yesterday after school, I did my new workout routine, which consists largely of attempting to do various pull ups, sweating eight gallons, and then returning to the air conditioning, feeling somewhat triumphant, but mostly sore. As you probably know from experience, a rigorous exercise program leaves a man feeling peckish . . .

Leonid Meteor Shower Tuesday Morning

Astronomers predicted an incredible show this year as the earth passed through the debris left by the Temple-Tuttle comet, creating what are commonly referred to as the Leonid Meteor showers. The best viewing in our part of the world was in the early morning on Tuesday, November 19, 2002.
