Scenic Adair Co., KY intersection: Acree & Old Montpelier Roads

2017-09-16 - Montpelier, Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
The first time we approached this intersection taking Acree Road from White Oak Road, and turned left to see the views along Old Montpelier Road and returning to KY 92 at Pleasant Hill Christian Church, we had no idea where a turn left would take us; but, turns out it's just a mile from the Central Business District of Montpelier. A of the left side of this photo would have told us so. The rising hill, atop which the original Montpelier stood is readily identifiable. Each time we've visited, though, it's the treatment around the road side has been a reminder of Barbara Armitage's motto for the Adair County Garden Club, Changing Adair County one garden at a time.. The tallest plant in the picture is asparagus, delightful here as an ornamental plant, and a plant which evokes memories of all the volunteer asparagus so prevalent along lanes and fencerows all over this part of Kentucky, and a time when gleaners could safely harvest the plant with no fear of herbicide poisoning, and yet another reminder that this relatively safe, very beneficial, highly prized plant is not more intensely cultivated, is not on restaurant menus in season, has not already created an agri-tourism destination draw for the county. For sure, the best tasting asparagus is, home grown. - EW
