The Trabue-Russell House's stunning Honeysuckle Bush

2015-05-22 - 201 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Columbians share a passion for this almost whimsical cultivation of an oft-despised, frequently tortured plant which gives so many of us so much pleasure. We suspect, but haven't found out for sure, who nurtures this Honeysuckle Vine shaped into an ornamental bush at the Trabue-Russell House on Jamestown Street. (We'd like to know who originally thought to do this, to thank them for their vision). It presents a pleasing aspect to the Memorial Day glimpse of the preservation of historic residences in this neighborhood. On the right is the a glimpse of home of the late Dr. Oris & Jessie Aaron. The flag, appropriately accented with red geraniums, is the home of Columbia City Councillor Dr. Ron and his wife Gayle Rogers, and, just beyond, the home of Della Shaw. The honeysuckle bush and the Trabue Russell House reminds me of the days when I provided something of a Greyline tour of Columbia for prospective physicians and nurse practioners. Coming over Jamestown Hill, I could predict what each would say when they caught sight of the Historic Adair County Courthouse - "That's the most beautiful public building I ever saw." That fits in with maybe the primary purpose my wife, Linda and I had when Columbia! Magazine and its successor, ColumbiaMagazine.com was established: Economic Development in its truest sense, and in its most economical mode. Preservation and cultural aspects are so important if we want real Economic Development. - EW
