Scenic Cumberland Co., KY - Hopewell Acres at Amandaville

2015-05-18 - Amandaville on Crocus Creek, Cumberland County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, CM photo.
Kentucky 704 from Columbia to Burkesville remains one of the most beautiful on earth. Ridgetop panoramas, long views down valleys, and twisty turns with surprises around every corner make every mile exciting, for first timers and frequent travelers as well. The road is absolutely stunning today with the redolence of honeysuckle, especially in the evenings, newly bloomed daisies along the way. Woodlands, even those recently harvest, are lush green, and it's a wild animal and bird paradise. But there is a certain sadness for those of us who remember the beautiful old structures along the way, once so much more prevalent, but are falling away too quickly. Almost all the churches still stand, and thankfully, the most striking icon of the byway, Hopewell Acres, above, seems to stand eternal. It's still in the Chowing family, owned by John and Joe Chattin Chowning, still in operation as a farm, timberland, and oil producing property, and looks very much as it has since it was owned by the present owners' parents.
