Columbia Courthouse from Tim Lee Carter era 2011-08-14 - 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo submitted by Tara-Hadley Hansen. Tara Hadley-Hansen sends this wonderful photo of the Historic Adair County Courthouse. She writes, "Hi, I found this old RPPC (real photo postcard) of the Columbia courthouse. I love this photo and thought maybe some others would enjoy it as well! Thanks!" -Tara Hadley-Hansen A close inspection of the sign shows that it is a campaign banner for a much beloved U.S. Representative, the late Tim Lee Carter (September 2, 1910 - March 27, 1987), Tompkinsville, KY. This was back when Adair County was still in the 5th District, in Kentucky. If anyone could identify the whittlers - or guess at their identities - that might help. A note of some progress: If the photo were in color, it would probably show the awful yellow paint on the lamp posts; that was in a time when the Kentucky highway department at Somerset was hellbent on carrying out an Uglification Program, just because they could. Praise the Lord and thank the old Columbia, KY Daily Statesman and Ralph Roy Waggener, that sad practice was stopped. Tim Lee Carter was here in Adair County so often, frequently in the company of his local representative the late Aaron Pyles, that many people would have thought him a resident.
