Old Adair Post Offices: Glens Fork, KY/Larry Smith

2011-07-28 - Glens Fork, KY - Photo by Larry Smith.
Larry Smith Operations Manager for WAVE FM 92.7 and WVLC 99.9, phone (270) 384-7979 at 92.7, shares this photo he took of the now abandoned Glens Fork, KY post office. Adair County Historian Mike Watson thinks there have been, over the years, at least 80 post offices in Adair County. This is one of them, though it is probably not the only venue for the village's post office. For many communities, the local post office served as a primary meeting place to exchange the news of the day, a function co-served by the community's general store, which every neighborhood needs. Glens Fork is one of the lucky communities, where Ken, Vicky & Jake Hill are are preserving the Hardscratch General Store, which, with not so limited financial infusions from the owners, continues to serve an otherwise thriving town. The photo was taken back in the winter, in a time some can still remember, before Saharan climes took over. -Ed Waggener
