Christmas Snow 2010: Weeping Cherry stars in winter

2010-12-26 - Photo by Linda Waggener. 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY
The small cherry tree in this corner of the Square stars with its branches frosted with Christmas snow, in front of the Adair Annex, 424 Public Square. The mailing center at the location, with USPS, UPS, and FedEX receptacles are poignant reminders to so many of us who remember the importance of the local post office as a place to exchange the news of the day, Downtown, when one of the Downtown Postoffices was located in the corner, during the latter days of Ray Flowers tenure as postmaster. Before that, the post office was located where Mouser Real Estate is today, in the Wid Harris Building at the inbound lane to the square from Campbellsville ST. Lately, we can remember the same social center at W. Guardian and Burkesville ST, before the post office moved out of town, into the country, where it is now at 800 Burkesville ST, where it still has some of the same function. All this adds a nostalgic footnote to the perceived value of economy and efficiency over values - the invaluable sense of community neighborhoods had when Adair County had over two dozen post offices. -EW
