Marion Co., KY: Richard and Mahala Greenwell Family

2010-12-09 - Photo by the Feedman. Marion Co., KY
The Feedman writes: "Best guess on when and where photo was taken is 1905 at the Ben F Mattingly farm. Basing this on the age of Francis Edward Greenwell, who was born in 1890 and looks to be 14 to 15 years old in this photo. Richard and Mahala Greenweel were the parents of my Grandmother, Susan Bethane Browning. Richard served with distinction during the Civil War with the 10th Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, mustering out at the end of the war with a rank of " Wagoner ". The 10th Regiment waged war for the union for three years, ranging from its home state of Kentucky to Atlanta. The regiment began the war with with 867 men , suffered a 40% casualty rate at Chickamauga, and helped break Confederate lines at Jonesboro. At the end of the war only 140 men staggered home in victory. In old age Richard and Mahala moved to Louisville to live with their Daughters. Richard did not take well to life in the city...He commented " that he had to go inside for the bathroom and outside to smoke." Seen in the Columbia Magazine Group at Flickr.
