Birds of KY: Adair County duck flummoxes the experts 2010-02-14 - Adair Co. KY - Photo by Barbara Armitage. The Identification of this beautiful duck photographed by Barbara Armitage has both the photographer and ornithologist and co-Birding 101 faculty member Wendy Burt flummoxed. It's a male Gadwall: The contrasting light and dark gray of the head and body, the darker patch on the head, and the reddish patch in the middle of the wing identify this bird as a male Gadwall. The Gadwall is a close relative to the Mallard, and can often be found feeding alongside them during the winter. While not a rare duck, it's still a good find for Adair County. -Derek Coomer, Bloomington, IN. 2010-02-14 It is immature female Canvasback: The best that I can make out on this species would lead me to say this is a Immature female Canvasback. The one feature that stands out is the very dark beak and the slope along the top edge.
