Birding 101: Practice of birdwatching can be cheep - or not

2010-02-07 - 409 Fairground ST, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Barbara Armitage, her presentation on providing habitat for birds can be very cheap, as beautifying a fence row by letting it grow up, to a fairly expensive one, getting a store-bought Purple Martin condo. Admitting that she had paid $400 for an 18-gourd model which is supported by a telescoping stainless steel pole, a member of the Birding 101 class said that, "I didn't do that, but it's worth it." He said that he had started with two gourds and has three dozen. There's nothing like going out in the yard and having a first cup of coffee and listening to them sing." The magazine article Barbara Armitage is displaying is from Kentucky Living magazine in its February 2010 issue. February is the month Purple Martins return to Kentucky, according to the article. As Barbara Armitage would say, "They're coming here to be counted."
