Road 80 Miracle Hill

2009-12-20 - Russell Springs Highway, Adair County, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. It could be called 'Miracle Thrill Hill' because it is a miracle the Russell Creek creekbed is piled high with 1950s and 1960s cars. Time was, when teenage boy drivers from both Adair and The County, their insensate brains stowed away in their scrotums, used the hill to "bury the hand" on speedometers in their fathers' slow old Plymouths and six cylinder Chevrolets- cars which could barely top 75 mph on the level/ But using the steep slope of the Russell Creek Hill had the thrill of reaching 110-112 when they reached the bridge. The scene is approximately 9 mile east of Columbia on KY 80. The hill has a more practical use in cycling, allowing riders to shoot the east side hill, making a third of the ascent without turning the pedals on revolution.
