Attractive low cost Address Marker standard

2009-07-29 - Taylor Services, 506 Fairground ST, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Chester Taylor, owner of Taylor Services, 506 Fairground ST, Columbia, KY, holds his low-cost solution to the need for an easy to install Address Marker standard. It's a painted fence post ($4.00) at Adair Farmers Southern States Store, with two holes bored in the post. The post was spray painted white, to make it more attractive for yards.. New holes were bored in the Address Marker, which was attached to the standard with a couple of ten-cent bolts and nut sets. The standards can be installed with an ordinary fence pole driver. Decorative steel scrolls can be added to the posts at a very low cost, Taylor said. While many Address Markers can be attached to mail box posts, the Address Markers should only be installed in the yard of the location, on the street or highway bearing the location address. Address markers should be erected as stand alone signs if obstructions make the signs hard to read. A major drive to have Address Markers at all homes, businesses, churches, cemeteries, campus buildings, and playing fields is planned for this fall, led by the Adair Fiscal Court, Emergency Response units, Adair 911, the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce, country stores in the villages of Adair County, utility companies, church groups, and organizations installing the signs as fund raisers. The signs are available now at the Adair County Sheriff's Office, 500 Public Square now, soon 424 Public Square, for $10 each. Addresses, if not known, can be obtained from Mary Allender, Adair 911 Coordinator and Address Coordinator, at (270) 384-4760. Chester Taylor, who made the post just as a favor, was enthusiastic about helping the project, "We really need to get these signs up, everywhere," he said. At present, the voluntary - the Adair County way - posting of the signs seems to be working better than mandatory requirements in other counties. Comments and suggestions on installation, invited.
