A Question for Scientists of Ages:
What to call Joe Coffey cucumber?

2009-07-25 - From Montpelier, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
It's a question for the Scientists and Great Thinkers of the Ages, men like the late Dr. Billy Neat or Pete Walker: What to call Joe Coffey's unusual tri-knotted Straight 8 Cucumber: A "24," a "Two Dozen," or just "Good Eating." Joe Coffey is one of Adair County's all time great gardeners, and he reports that in addition to the entertainment this cucumber has brought to his Montpelier Road, Adair County, KY, farm neighborhood, he has to say that in all his time, "This has been the best year for gardens I've ever seen." Not only have the the rains come at just the right times, he said, but there has been just the right amount of sunshine, and the temperatures, moderate for this time of summer, have been downright pleasant. On his hilltop acreage with the 360 degree panorama it affords of the beautiful Adair and Russell County countryside, there's always a soft breeze blowing, making tending the garden all the more pleasant for him. He wanted to make a public offer to save some seeds from his Straight Eights for celebrated Adair County gardener A.L. Sinclair. "Let Pewee know I'll do that, for him," Mr. Coffey said.
