Epicurean Kentuckian: Traditional Adair Co. peasant breakfast

2009-07-23 - Fortune Street kitchen, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Traditional Adair County, KY summer peasant breakfast, fit for royalty, with a rich German, Welsh, English, Hawaiaan, Knifleyan-Garlinian influences. Hard boiled eggs with black and red pepper, sea salt and mustard. Store bought celery from the Walmart. Cucumbers from Ricky and Mitzi Bault's garden. Brought on cold turkey; didn't have any bacon or Penn's Country Ham. Brought on cilantro and radishes. Home grown Big Boy tomato steak missing a dollop of Mayo, bought at Gene and Joyce Hoots vegetable stall, 602 Tutt Street. And the piece de resistance, maybe the best food ever, Mitzi Bault's secret recipe, homemade, Adair County grown Squash Pickles. Never tasted anything better. And very strong black coffee. Straight. -EW
