Snakes of Kentucky: Black Racer, Greenbriar Ridge

2009-05-20 - Greenbriar Ridge, South Adair Co., KY - Photo by Kay Haupt.
THIS BLACK RACER SNAKE, a non-poisonous one, was photographed by Kay Haupt in a field of new mown hay on Greenbriar Ridge between Breeding and Chance in Southern Adair County, KY. The photos were both apparently taken from the same distance. According to the University of Kentucky, the snakes can range in size from three to five feet long. In its "up periscope" position on the right, its distinctive white chin is evident. The University of Kentucky snake identification site says the black racer eats "rodents, small birds, lizards, snakes, frogs, insects." Flickr.com Note: What has happened to the green snake population? The slender little guys used to be the most common snakes in the garden. I haven't seen any for 25 years since our Concord grapes vine was poisoned a herbicide. EW
