Epicurean Kentuckian: Mushroom time in Knifley

2009-04-09 - Somewhere across Green River, District 6, Adair County, KY - Photo by Susie Q.
IT IS HARD TO ENUMERATE all the wonders of living in greater Knifley, KY, but perhaps the greatest trait is of Kniflyans is, they eat good.. And in that magical land of great cooks, for the most clever, the most resourceful, none are eating better than those who have the primal skills it takes to find what many consider the greatest delicacy of them all, Dry Land Fish or Morel Mushrooms. For Incomers, a Cardinal Rule is that One Never Gets to Specific about Wherea mess of mushrooms come from; that's in poor taste. And if one should see an Adair Countian walking along a road carrying nothing but a pail and a hefty snake stick, and one should ask him or her if there are any dry land fish around, and the Adair Countian says, "never heard of them," it doesn't really county as outright lying. One is never really lying when they tell an untruth to protect the honor of a woman or to protect the location of of a morel mushroom field. It is hard to conceive of a deity who would forgive that. In any case, they are living high in greater Knifley now, on everything from country ham and biscuit to tender new poke to fried crappie and for the gourmet elite, dry land fish.
