Scenic Adair Co., KY: New view, Memorable Old Columbia

LINDA WAGGENER captured yet another unforgettable view of one of America's most photographed clocktowers. This view of the Adair County Courthouse Steeple is a new one, taken through the window of Cafe on the Square, Downtown Columbia's newest eatery. Community leaders are looking at adaptive re-use of the building, when the courts and the office of Adair County Circuit Court move to the new Adair County Judicial Center at Campbellsville and Merchant Streets. Among the options voiced: Arranging management of the landmark with Lindsey Wilson College, for a downtown coffee shop, bookstore, and criminal justice classrooms upstairs; moving City Hall to the structure; and making the building a museum. A growing sentiment is being heard to tear away the building's additions, which the late Janice Holt Giles termed "excretions."
