Main Street, Greensburg, when Freeman Faulkner was there

2007-03-24 - Greensburg, KY - Photo From the collection of Larry Smith. Larry Smith, WHVE FM 92.7 the Wave's award-winning newsman, shares this photo of Main Street, Greensburg, KY. The section is from the Old Courthouse Square looking south down KY 61. Smith dates the picture to the early 50s. The fire truck and the vehicles all have 40s looks, but there are also parking meters. The scene today is changed, but the buildings are very similar, showing only a few cosmetic changes. Most striking absences might be the absence of the flag of the Greensburg national beverage "Just Wonderful Double Cola (at the time, before Ski--also synonymous with Greensburg--fanatics took over) , the auto dealership sign on the sixth store front, and the Texaco sign in the lower right side. Notice, too, the car parked backward , and the likely double parked delivery truck (Skaggs Transfer?). Bigger changes are on Greensburg's Square, really worth seeing, and just a short bicycle ride from Columbia. Recent beautification projects have made the downtown one of America's most beautiful. Adair Countian Jimmy Downey says Colonial Williamsburg, VA, is no match for Greensburg. This note added November 29, 2007, from Terry Lile, "The fire truck in the photo is a 1937 International. This is knowledge from present Greensburg Fire Chief Bill Lile. Lile joined the Greensburg Fire Dept in 1957 when this truck was still in use as the #2 truck."
