Scenic Adair County: Site of Lenten services, luncheons

2007-02-25 - The entrance to the Adair County Chamber of Commerce - Photo By Ed Waggener.
Maybe Dr. Downey can explain the optics in this photo, we can't. This picture just couldn't be aligned to make every structure perpendicular, so the choice was to make the Columbia United Methodist Church steeple point directly up. The steeple can be nearly invisible in heavens, but Saturday it stood out distinctly against a deep blue-gray sky. The church is the site of community Lenten services and lunches on the Wednesdays leading up to Easter Sunday, 2007. At 9:09am, just a hour or so after the photo was posted, Dr. Max Downey, whose Downey Eye Clinic is across the street from the large white house, sent this explanation, "The location from which the picture was taken gives an aperture (an aperture is an opening through which light may pass). The aperture is generated by the entrance to the Chamber of Commerce. This aperture creates a defraction (a bending) of light that the camera picks up. Light doesn't always travel in a straight line. I hope this helps."
