Scenic Adair: Blind Mans Store, North Adair CO, KY

2006-08-26 - Eastridge Cemetery Road - Photo CM Staff. The scenic ruins of the D.D. Eastridge Store, tucked into the lower southwestern jag of Eastridge Cemetery Road, the part which intersects with the Roley Yuma Road, is a magnet for photographers today. One from Carroll County, KY, had just visited the site before this photo was taken. The silvered ruins are being allowed to gracefully age in a fitting memory of an often noted travel marker.. The store is more popularly known as "The Blind Man's Store." Wayne Eastridge, distant kin of D.D. Eastridge, said that the proprietor had lost his vision when he was digging a well, and was advised that dynamite would loosen the earth. When the dynamite failed to detonate after a reasonable time, D.D. Eastridge went back to check it and it exploded. The blast caused D.D. Eastridge to loose his sight. Wayne Eastridge remembers the store operating until the 1970s. Wayne Eastridge said that D.D. and the other the Eastridges came into the area from North Caroline during the Great Depression.. (Additional information and/or corrections are welcome.)
Day trip: From Knifley, travel East on the Elkhorn RD. Turn north of Eastridge Cemetery road. Drive slowly to enjoy the farmland scenery. Stay on Eastridge Cemetery Rd to go north to Feathersburg, or turn right on the Roley-Yuma and follow you instincts to get back to Knifley. Or get lost and ask directions. It is gorgeous country, whether you end up in rural Adair, Casey, or Taylor County.
