10th Annual Green River Antique Tractor Show: Historic roller

2006-06-19 - Garrison Construction, Company, 7 miles north of Columbia - Photo CM staff.

Roller custom built by late Elvin Corbin helped build, resurface many Columbia streets

Lewis Garrison, owner of Garrison Construction Company, and the founder of the Green River Antique Gas Engine and Tractor Show, is especially proud of this roller. It has a great story. The roller was use to construct a lot of Columbia streets in the 1960s and 1970s. It was custom made by Elvin Corbin, Garrison's late father-in-law. At the time the roller was created, Mr. Corbin had a private construction company in Columbia and was director of the City Works Department. The roller is a modified McCormick Deering Farmall H tractor. Among the streets built, almost from scratch, was the heavily travelled Hurt Street shortcut from downtown to the Jamestown Street shopping centers. Mr. Corbin did the work a little at a time, at an overall cost which was remarkably low. Garrison says that he has operated the Elvin Corbin roller as well as the the orange Ingraham model next to it. In his opinion, t Mr. Corbin's roller is easier to steer and does a better job than the national brand model. The machines were on display Saturday at the 10th annual antique tractor show.
