Adair County Judge Executive Larry Russell Bryant took a minute after the Economic Development Authority meeting to say he will not give up asking for an occupational tax which will put Adair County in line for future matching grant opportunities. He understands he got off to a rocky start with the Magistrates when he asked them to pass a one percent occupational tax right at the start of a new administration. Magistrates responded with a no but have since offered to support a quarter percent occupational tax. All eight of them are talking about a two-year window which should stabilize the county budget with possible tax relief after that. Some Adair County Magistrates are proud to be one of ten counties among the state's 120 getting by with no payroll tax. The Judge, however, says he wants more for Adair County's future than just getting by. He said voting in anything less than a one percent tax goes against all the advice he's had researching other counties across the state and in surrounding counties that have already instituted this tax. EDA Chair Bobby Morrison tries to make out a name on a headstone from the 1800s in the Squires Cemetery on the Green River Commerce Park property. Since it was discovered that a cemetery on industrial park grounds could potentially turn off some prospects, the board has been working through family ties and state regulations to relocate it to a permanent home. Robert writes, "For our return trip to Utah we included a drive and some hiking in the Valley of Fire State Park. This is a wonderful State Park and is only about 49 miles from the famous Vegas Strip...and pretty much on the way to Utah. This pic was taken on one of our hikes. We had visited this park on an earlier trip, but that time it was just too hot to hike. This year we had cooler temperatures and were able to hike a couple trails."
